Day Nine
Saturday August 16, 2031
This Saturday morning, we slept in some and woke up around nine thirty in the morning. After being at the Brooklyn Bridge in the late evening, we went to a nearby diner to have dessert. James said something about going to a diner while here for his research on Jacob and wanted to me to try their apple pie. The pie was excellent and reminded me of my grandma's trademark apple pie. She did a fabulously delicious apple pie with an open lattice topping to the pie and sprinkled some cinnamon on top. The diner was so close to hers and I wondered if she got it from someone in New York.
"Mmm... this is to die for!" I exclaimed as I ate the hot pie.
"Yeah! They serve it with ice cream too if you want." James said as he ate his pie with ice cream. I just ate the pie and nothing else. We did have water to drink but the main attraction was their apple pie.
"I think the pie is enough. It reminds me of my grandma's apple pie." I revealed.
"Is this your maternal grandma we're talking about?"
"Yes! She was known for making these and was popular for this pie. Also I requested it for my birthday when she was alive. I do love cake but her popular apple pie was the best!" I remarked.
"Did she ever share it with your mom or you?"
"Unfortunately, she did not. Also I don't know if she got it from someone or a cookbook." I said while I ate pie.
"Maybe we can try coming up with a version of this. Does it taste the same as hers?"
"It does and it tastes so familiar to me." I said, tasting the ingredients as I ate more pie.
"It could be when your grandparents came here for a book and author tours. They did travel a lot from what you told me." He said in between bites.
"Yes, that's true." I said as a waitress came by.
"How is the pie? Everything OK?" She asked.
"Great! We love it! My wife said her grandma made apple pies like this one." James responded.
"Is that so? The owner of the diner bakes all of our pies." The waitress informed us. "She does it from scratch."
"Is it possible to meet her?" James asked. "We want to tell her how much we like her apple pie."
"I'm sorry she's at home right now but you can come by tomorrow morning. She will be here then." She said.
"That would be great! It tastes a lot like my grandma's apple pie." I said, looking up at the waitress. She looked almost like Erin with the same color of brown hair. The waitress flinched in surprise.
"Do we know each other? You have a familiar face." She asked.
"Uh, as far as I know we do not. Maybe you're mistaking me for someone else." I remarked.
"Oh, please forgive me. It's been a long day and I'm tired now. My shift ends soon. Enjoy your apple pie." She said. "Oh by the way I'm Sammi or Samantha. So if you come here tomorrow, please tell them I sent you." Samantha said as she gave us our bill.
"OK, Sammi." James said. She smiled at James. "What's the name of the owner?" He asked.
"Her name is Stephanie." Samantha answered. "But everyone here calls her Steph." She said, gesturing to her coworkers.
"Thanks! Good to know." I said as she said goodbye to us and walked away.
"Is she a relative of yours? She looks almost like Erin." James asked.
