"i never had thoughts that controlled me
until something bad left me so lonely"On May 23, Detective Dane Mason was pronounced dead. He was only 24.
He had died on his hospital bed due to his severe injuries, surrounded by his team who had struggled within that rubble with him.
Upon the impact of that explosion, Yeonjun, Jungkook, and Dane had fallen to the ground as the building shook and imploded. The roof was falling apart, and because he had many regrets to his senior in the days leading up to that point, Dane Mason flung his body over Jungkook and shielded him from a much worser fate.
Unfortunately for Dane, the ruckus destroyed him. His ribs, his spine, his arms, his legs, his head. While several officers lost their lives outside of that building, others rushed to aid those who were inside and immediately sent the three detectives to the hospital alongside every other injured officer.
Dane suffered the blow the worst, and eventually, he had succumbed to his injuries—a collapsed lung, internal bleeding in the brain, broken ribs and arms and legs—and died only hours later. It left Jungkook absolutely devastated. Lost. Guilty.
Chul offered to inform Dane's family back in America, but Jungkook—who was only left with scratches and bruises and a mild concussion—asked to do it instead. Even despite the way his chest ached at the idea of it. But Dane had been his to watch over. It was him who Dane was supposed to shadow, who Dane was supposed to learn from. Jungkook felt it only right if it was him who broke the news and offered the comfort.
Yeonjun would be on bed rest for awhile. He had dislocated his shoulder and had a severe, external head injury that scared Jungkook immensely.
And it made him feel even guiltier than before. If Dane hadn't shielded him... hadn't protected him... it would have been him on these beds instead. Dane Mason saved his life with his own. How could he ever repay him now?
Jungkook was in the hospital waiting room when he finished his phone call with Dane's mother. He sat in one of the chairs with his head in his hands as he replayed her mortified sob over and over in his head. It was a devastating scream—the kind only a mother losing a child can emit.
His entire body shook with guilt and sorrow and grief and every single negative emotion a human being was capable of feeling. The burning desire to slaughter Yamada Satsuki would always be somewhere fresh in his mind, but the overpowering guilt and sorrow and grief he was feeling had somehow managed to wipe thoughts of her clean in that moment.
All he wanted to do was scream. Cry. Vomit, maybe.
"You wanna know what he said before we left the precinct to find you this morning?" A soft and sad voice appeared beside him.
