Then something occurred to him "The office" John B said out loud. Quickly moving through the Château, pulling Coli with him

"What?" Pope asks following close behind him

"My dad. My dad's office. He always kept the office locked because he was worried about his competitors stealing his Royal Merchant research. We used to laugh at him like he was gonna find it. But now that he's gone, I've just kinda... I just left it as he kept it" John B told the group of his friends who were standing outside the office

"Yeah, for where he gets back" Coli reassured her friend, sending him a small smile

The Routledge boy nods "Yeah" stepping aside and letting everyone in

"I've slept over here like 600 times, and I've never seen this door open" Pope revealed

"Yeah, same. I've been here so many times, even when Big John was still here, and this door was never open, I remember when John B and I were little. Whenever he wasn't home the door was also locked, we would always try to open it" The elder Jones added

John B then takes an old family tree down from the wall and sets it down so everyone could see "Here, look. This is the original owner, right here" The boy pointed to a small slip of white paper, tacked onto the cork board

"Okay. Robert Q Routledge, 1880 to 1920. There's the lucky compass right there" Kie pointed out in the picture of John B his old uncle or something like that

While everyone else was marveling about the history of the Routledge family, Brooke just sat in the chair by the desk, propping her feet up. She'd heard this story a few times. Back in New York, when she asked her older sister about her best friend, their conversations always turned in to everything Coraline knew about John B and his family

"Actually, um... he was shot after he bought it. Then the compass was shipped back to Henry. He was killed in crop-dusting accident when he had the compass. After he died, the compass was giving to Stephen. He had the compass with him when he died in Vietnam" John B explains going down the red line on the message board

"Let me guess, he died in action, right?" JJ asks

"Nope, he was killed by a banana truck, in country" Coli answer for the Routledge boy. Everyone looks at her questioningly how she knew that ,well, except for John B of course. And Brooke, who looks absently through the window, picking at her nails

“So, after that, Stephen passed the compass down to him, my dad” John B continues

"Hm. Sounds like there's reoccurring theme here" JJ pointed out

"Yeah, you have a death compass" Pope said blatantly

“I don't” The Routledge boy scoffed

"You have a death compass" Brooke said in a sing-song tone, now finally speaking

"Get rid of it. It's cursed, and made its way back to you" JJ advised

“Look, my dad used to talk about this compartment in here. Just like Lina said, soldiers used to hide secret notes” the Routledge boy explains, unscrewing the bottom part of the compass
