10. Senior year
Kevin is now officially ready to return to school and couldn't be more excited. Kevin is starting his senior year of high school, but even more importantly, tomorrow it's his 18th birthday, and the gang has something special prepared for him to celebrate his release from the hospital and his birthday.
"I can't believe you're leaving today. Do you have plans for your birthday?" Matt asked his friend and Kevin sighed.
"Going out and having dinner at a restaurant," Kevin said determined, Matt just chuckled, it may seem like something simple for someone's 18th birthday, but none of the gang has done something like that in a very long time. When Kevin got sick, he started to value more the little and simple things he used to do all the time. The same thing with the other teens, their lives changed after their diagnosis.
"That sounds nice, what are you planning on eating?" Matt asked curiously.
"Lasagna," Kevin said without a doubt while he packed his stuff.
"I gotta go, remember, 5 pm at the lounge, we will celebrate," Matt said firmly and Kevin nodded, Matt then left the room and went back to his room when he saw Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie there.
"Hi guys," Matt greeted, lying down on his bed.
"Hey Matt," Mitch said.
"Is everything ready for Kevin's birthday?" Matt asked.
"Yes, my mom will be bringing a small cake for us and Scott is almost done editing the video," Kirstie said.
"Awesome, can I see it?" Matt asked curiously.
"Not yet. It's a surprise for everyone," Scott said firmly.
"Fine," Matt grunted playfully. "Now what?" he continued, his mood changing immediately.
"You're hyperactive today," Mitch pointed out and Kirstie chuckled.
"You are," she giggled.
"I am happy and I'm feeling like myself after a few days of this new treatment," Matt responded and everyone chuckled, Matt was just like a little kid and everyone loved that.
"Anyways, what about you guys?" he asked. Kirstie started to tell her story about something her mom told her that was funny, and Matt was looking at her with hearty eyes which Mitch and Scott nodded. The couple looked at each other while Kirstie was talking and just nodded, Matt liked Kirstie.
Kirstie and Matt kept talking after Mitch and Scott left the room to give them more privacy and she started to realize that Matt was cute, they had been talking even more lately and she came to the conclusion that Matt was a gentleman, he was funny, sweet, and caring. I think I like Matt, she thought.
At about 5 p.m., the gang and Kevin's family were together at the lounge. Kirstie's mom had made a small cake for everyone to share and not leave anything. After singing Happy Birthday to him and eating cake, Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, and Matt were ready to share the video they had made with Kevin.
"We made something special for you Kev," Scott started. "We compiled pictures and videos of you throughout your whole childhood and the time you've been here. I asked everyone for pictures and this is how it turned out," Scott continued while pressing play on his computer.
The video then started playing, it has tons of pictures of him when he was a little kid, pictures, and videos of him with the gang doing something goofy or just laughing. At the end of the video was a collective message from the other four members.
"Hey, Kevin," everyone said in unison.
"We wanted to wish you the best of birthdays and the best of the best for what the future has prepared for you," Scott started.
"Yes, we are so happy and very proud of you for fighting hard," Mitch continued.
"We want to thank you for being the amazing friend you are and for sharing your wisdom with us," Kirstie said.
"We hope all your dreams come true and you live and enjoy every day of your life," Matt finished.
"We love you, Kevo!" They all said. Kevin got teared up a bit. He was speechless. He truly had the best friends anyone could wish for.
"Thank you so much, guys," Kevin said, and all five group-hugged. "I love it, and I love you." Everyone enjoyed the rest of the eventful evening, and later Kevin returned to his room to pack the rest of his stuff.
The next morning, the gang said goodbye to Kevin and wished him the best for his senior year of high school. Kevin promised to tell them everything about high school since none of them have been able to assist one and get the high school experience people tell them. Kevin was officially healthy!
