14. Christmas
Christmas is right around the corner and Matt and Kirstie are ready to be discharged they are happy about that, but Scott is going home after being in the hospital for around 10 months and he couldn't be more excited. "I am so ready to go home!" Scott said packing his bag and Matt chuckled, packing his bag as well.
"Oh really? I didn't notice," Matt said sarcastically.
"Ha, ha. Very funny. No, but really, it's been a while since I've been home," Scott said seriously.
"You know you have to come back in 2 weeks right?" Matt hesitated in asking, he didn't want to trigger Scott, but luckily, he took it in a silly way.
"I don't focus on the future, girl. I live the present," Scott sassed and Matt laughed. A nurse entered the room "Ready boys?" She asked and they nodded, the nurse took them to the main entrance where their parents, Kirstie, Dr. Hayes, and Mitch were waiting for them.
"Matt, congratulations on finishing chemo. We have a few more steps left, more physical therapy, and more importantly the selection of your prosthetic leg. But for now, enjoy your holidays," Dr. Hayes said and he and Matt took hands.
"Thank you, Dr. Hayes. For everything," Matt responded.
"Kirstie," Dr. Lee started. "You are now fully healthy and I am proud of how hard you've fought. Take good care of yourself. Merry Christmas," she continued and Kirstie hugged her.
"Merry Christmas to you too, Dr. Lee. Thank you so much," Kirstie said.
"Scott, we'll see each other soon with a new chemo. We are not done yet, but for now, enjoy your holidays," Dr. Hayes said and Scott thanked him as well.
A few days later, it was Christmas day and all the gang was meeting together at the Grassis residence to celebrate together and have a nice and delicious dinner. It was around 5 p.m. when everyone started to show up at the Grassi household. "Everybody listen up!" Scott said before eating dinner.
"This has been a very eventful year for all of us. Matt arrived and the gang was complete, but we also lost a very close and important friend to us. We lost Avi. Kevin and Kirstie also got the transplants they needed, Matt lost his leg, Mitch is now cancer-free and Matt is close to reaching that stage as well. We have cried, and we have laughed. And I am grateful to have you all, we are more than friends, we are a family," Scott concluded and everyone clapped at him.
After dinner, the gang was together in Mitch's room while the adults were downstairs talking. "How's high school going, Kev?" Mitch asked his friend who was sitting down on his desk chair.
"I had a hard time getting used to the quick pace of it, but I got it. The work is a bit harder as well, but nothing that I cannot handle," Kevin said confidently. "I kind of feel like I'm third wheeling here, everyone is dating and I'm still single," Kevin said nervously.
"Just tell us if you feel uncomfortable," Scott said to make Kevin feel better.
"Did you already make friends at school, Kev?" Kirstie said.
"Yes. I met Leigh, she's nice, and some of her other friends too," Kevin answered.
"How about we sing a Christmas song?" Matt suggested.
"Yeah, we haven't sung in a while," they sang to classical Christmas songs that everyone suggested. Mitch ended up singing with his beautiful and angelic voice that blew everyone's mind. When they were done singing, they looked at each other with a proud smile.
"We should sing more often," Scot said, chuckling, and everyone nodded. "It was beautiful and...magical," he continued.
Later that night, the gang was asleep around Mitch's room as they were having a sleepover. When Scott noticed Kirstie was awake. "You good, K?" He asked.
"Yeah, just thinking."
"About what?"
"You."
"Me? Why me?"
"All of us are either fully better or getting better but you aren't. You're still sick and have to go back to the hospital after the holidays to keep doing treatment," she said pointing at Scott's cannula. "It's not fair," she teared up. Scott just held her and tried to calm her down.
"It'll be ok, don't worry about it. Just enjoy your holidays," he said.
"Alright, Merry Christmas, Scotty."
"Merry Christmas, Kitty."
