13. One step away
"I'm so ready for this," Mitch said to his parents, he was getting his port removed tomorrow early and then he could go home forever. Mitch couldn't be more excited, he was declared cancer-free a while ago and is allowed to go back to school. His parents are also very proud of Mitch for how hard he has fought for the last four years.
"You're only one step away. You just need to ring the bell in a few weeks and all of this will be over," Nel said while tucking his son in his bed as it was bedtime.
"Yeah. You're also going home after the surgery," Mike said and Mitch gasped in excitement.
"We have a surprise for you as well, but we will save that for tomorrow," Nel said kissing Mitch's hair.
"Why are you like that?" Mitch asked surprised. "Anyways, I will also need a haircut to fix my hair and give it shape. It looks bad," Mitch complained.
"You look beautiful always," Scott said interrupting the conversation while leaning on the doorway of Mitch's room with his arms crossed.
"Scotty!" Mitch said and Scott approached the bed and greeted his boyfriend with a quick kiss.
"We will leave you guys alone," Mike said and then he and Nel left the room to give the boys more privacy.
"I'm glad you're happy. I'm proud of you," Scott said quietly looking at Mitch's eyes.
"Thank you," Mitch said and Scott leaned down to kiss Mitch passionately. The couple talked for a few more moments until it was time to go to bed.
The following morning, Mitch was taken into surgery while his parents were waiting for him in the waiting room when Scott, Matt, and Kirstie approached them to tell them the good news about Mitch's surprise in the afternoon.
"Hey kids," Mike said and hugged each one of them.
"Hey, Mike. Dr. Hayes said that we can go but should be careful," Matt started.
"Same here. Dr. Lee said that I may be released soon, so a day out should be good for me," Kirstie said with a smile.
"I'm glad, guys. Mitch will be so happy to see you all there," Nel said with a warm smile.
"Is Kevin going?" Scott asked.
"He is, he was very excited when we told him Mitch was getting released today," Nel said.
"That's exciting. We are leaving after lunch and be there before you guys arrive. Jessa will be there right?" Scott said.
"She will, she hasn't seen her brother in a long time because of college," Nel said happily.
It was one hour later when Mitch woke up from surgery and was loopy from the anesthesia, he said everything was blurry and was a little emotional, his parents were laughing a little at their son's cuteness.
When the Grassis were back home, the gang surprised Mitch and he didn't know if it still was the meds or if it was real. "Oh, my God. This is...amazing. What are you guys doing here?" Mitch asked sitting down on the couch.
"Your parents wanted to surprise you with a small party," Scott said, even though it was kind of hard to understand him with the mask he had covering his nose and mouth.
"How did you guys convince your doctors to let you come?" Kevin asked.
"Dr. Lee said that I'm doing much better and may get released in a few days so she allowed me to come just for a few hours," Kirsite answered and Matt kissed her cheek, making Kirstie blush and smile at him.
"Dr. Hayes said I'm doing good as well and I'll be getting released before the holidays, but we had to be careful," Matt said.
"I haven't been outside of the hospital for a long time, Dr. Hayes hesitated when Mitch's parents asked him for permission. My therapist suggested he let me come, that it would be good for me. Then, Dr. Hayes said I'll be home for the holidays," Scott said and everyone cheered, this was great news for their best friend.
"We should do something for the holidays," Mitch suggested.
