-Illys POV-

"Illyana."

Attila's voice was like a whip cutting through the air, chasing away the uncomfortable ringing in my ears and when my vision focused, I was looking up at his face, stern and emotionless as he stared down at me with his arms crossed over his broad pecs.

This time, however, he looked like his regular, thick-haired self, if only more imposing than usual, the intensity of his heterochromic gaze causing an unconscious shudder to race through my spine.

"Today we will visit a minimum of three memories. Times in your life when you felt joy, sadness, anger. Your task is simple. Separate yourself from the memory without my intervention," He explained, "Do not let it influence your emotional state as we don't need to overload the CRS when the time comes to revisit the day of your mother's murder."

"How is that simple, exactly?" I spoke before the thought even finished forming,

"All you have to do is remain stoic during the memory recall. The CRS requires a levelheaded approach in order for her to work efficiently and we also want to avoid any potential damage to your brain."

"You're saying I could wind up with brain damage?" I exclaimed in shock, "Why was I never made aware of this?"

"The probability is minimal," Attila admitted, "So long as you do not let your emotions consume you, you will be fine."

"Emotions aren't as easy to control as you make it sound. You of all people should understand that," I huffed and crossed my own arms, mirroring him, "I don't think this is going to work out."

"So you've decided to fail without even trying?"

"You're not listening to me," I hissed back, "You can't expect me to handle this kind of intense stimulus and have no reaction. I feel like you're doing this to me on purpose just to torture me and you don't actually care about finding my mother's killer at all."

"You clearly waste too much time overthinking," Attila scoffed, "I'm doing this because you're my only option."

"So, I'm supposed to just trust that you won't be a sadistic bastard when we both know what you're really like?" I asked angrily.

"Do not test my patience, Illyana," Attila gruffed, looking down at me with an icy scowl, "I've been nothing but transparent with you."
