The sight of my hometown started to fade on the horizon, just like the bitter sweet memories of all these years. I'm not saying I don't want to come back. These are the streets who made me the person I am today, and as much as I don't like to admit it, I'm probably going to miss them. I do hope to come back one day, but not now. Or anytime soon. Not until I finally settle down and get to experience what a "normal life" is all about.
This short drive to the train station was slowly killing me. Every single street, corner, avenue, person or even smell made all my memories come back. They will always have a place deep in my heart. There is no way to deny it.
I grew up being told that change is not a bad thing, and it is never as hard as it might seem. But that's not true. It's just another lie to put on the list. It is just as hard as it seems. And even though I keep repeating in my head that change is the best thing for me, some of my deepest and darkest fears will never go away.
If anyone back home heard me saying this, they would definitely be surprised. Everyone always looked at me as a strong, and even fierce, young woman. Maybe because of everything I've been put through growing up, or maybe because that's just who I am, or who I was designed to be. But there's a part of myself that I always tried my best to hide.
My weak side.
My fearful side.
The dark side of the moon, as people usually call it.
I promised myself I'd never let all those fears show, but that's not enough of a reason to say that they do not exist. As I said, some of them never fade away.
I take my last bag out of the backseat of the car as I thank and smile one last time to the taxi driver. I rushed to enter the train, but I stopped a second before entering, taking a deep breath.
"This is it"
I sighed, as I finally entered the big train.
---
After spending three hours stuck in a train, lost between the songs on my playlist, I finally arrived to what seemed to be my new home. Surprisingly, when I got out, there wasn't half as many people as they were back to where I (used to) live, which was a plus for me, since I find it quite difficult to start conversations with random people and make new friends.
The new city was quite small. The sky was dark grey, but the breeze wasn't too cold, which was to me, the perfect weather. I just got here, and I'm already starting to feel like I'm home.
The red car described by my real estate agent was already waiting for me. As soon as I started walking towards it, a lady came out and greeted me with the biggest smile. She looked like she was in her forties, but yet I couldn't pick on a single flaw on her face, which was covered by a thin layer of foundation that was slightly darker than her natural skin tone. By the smile on her face, I was now sure that it was Mrs. Saltzman.
"You're Chloe, aren't you darling?" She asks as she helps me with my luggage. I watch her really carefully as I see her stumbling a little on her red high heeled shoes.
"Yes, I am" A smile spreads across my face as I finally enter the car.
---
As we were heading to my new house, Mrs. Saltzman showed me lots of places to visit, which made me curious. She also told me about my neighbour, who lived in the apartment next to mine. She said we were the same age, and that she was also a really nice girl to hang out with.
The car finally stopped in front of a big white building. I was blown away, and also a bit proud of myself, for picking such a nice apartment to live in.
It was as pretty on the inside as it was on the outside. The living room was decorated in red, silver, black and white tones, just like the massive master bedroom. I didn't expect to live in such a big house, and I have to admit that I felt a little sad that I had no one to share it with. After seeing the rest of the house, I was sure I made the right choice. It was perfect and I felt really happy that things seemed to finally go on the right track.
---
Later that day, while I was laying on the couch taking small bites of my lasagne, I heard someone knocking on my door. I quickly stood up and opened it.
"Hi, I'm Ella" said the tall, pretty, skinny and dark blue eyed girl "I'm your neighbour"
"I'm Chloe" I smiled back to her.
"Welcome to the new city!" She seemed so nice and so excited, like she had been waiting for me for ages.
"Thank you so much" I blushed as I invited her to come into my new place. She immediately asked me if I needed help unpacking my things and I gave her a little tour of the house.
---
Time flew, and before I could notice, the skies had already turned black.
"So what are you doing tonight, Chloe?"
"Probably just have some rest. I'm really tired." I answer honestly.
"No way" Ella cuts me off "You're making some friends tonight"
"What do you mean?" I ask, not really wanting to hear the answer.
"We can go to a club near by, I want to introduce you to some of my friends" She pauses for a moment. "What do you think?"
"I really don't know. I have nothing to wear and I'm tired El"
"That's not an excuse" she giggles a little. "You're about the same size as I am, you can use one of my dresses. I'm not letting you stay in tonight" She holds my hand making me stand up.
She drags me into her apartment, which was very similar to mine.
"Why do I feel like I've known you for years?" I laugh, staring at my friend's closet, searching for a dress.
"I don't know, you just seem really nice" She smiles at me, handing me a short figure hugging black dress. "I think this one would look great on you"
I got changed in the bathroom and let Ella do my hair as I finished my make-up.
"Just a little bit of this" I say before taking a dark red lipstick that matched perfectly with my heavy winged black eyeliner. "I'm all done"
"You look gorgeous"
"Really?"
"Reeeally" She answers as if the answer was obvious. "Now let's go, they're waiting for us."
