After Luke and the boys told me the whole gang story, my freedom to walk around the house increased tremendously. Even though Luke was always shutting down the blinds, I could walk freely on his house now. It definitely felt more comfortable and safe to be around Luke now.
The smell of my home made lasagna, which I made for the starving boys while they were waiting at the living room, filled up the entire house.
"Chloeeee, how long is it gonna take?"
Time wasn't ticking as hard and slow as it was before. Despite my constant fear of Luke's rivals finding out where I was, there was always something I could do around the house. I cleaned and arranged it very often due to the huge amount of mirrors, windows and little details in every room. I also started cooking a lot for Luke and the boys. I don't do it every day though. The boys are huge fans of plastic food and pizza, and luckily for me, they never refuse to share.
Luke didn't ask me to do this. He didn't ask me to cook, clean or take care of the house while he was away "working". I do it because I want to. To be honest it's the least I can do, after everything Luke did for me. At the end of the day he saved my life. He was putting his life and his friends' at risk all because of an ordinary girl. And I wasn't very sure of how to thank him.
---
The afternoon was almost over. The sun was setting down, and I couldn't hear any noise coming from Luke's bedroom, which made me think that he wasn't there. So I went to the living room where I found him sitting on the floor next to the slightly open window.
I joined him and I noticed a strong smell coming out of his clothes. At first I thought it was just one of my dearly beloved cigarettes, but it was stronger than that. I look down to his hands to see him holding a blunt between his fingers.
He blew out the dense smoke out of his mouth while watching the sunset, before putting his head back to take the best out of his nirvana.
I decided to take advantage of this moment by asking Luke the questions that still had no answer to me.
"Luke?" I let out softly, trying to get his attention.
"Hmm?"
"Why did you start this gang after all?" I look down at my feet.
"It's a long story Chloe." He cuts me off, as usual.
"I'm glad we have all night then."
"Ugh" he lets out a little laugh in a sigh and blows out some more smoke. His eyes meet the sunset again, and I do the same.
"Years ago- I mean, many years ago, my dad was shot on his back by his best friend. Tobias' dad."
I completely freeze at his answer. I wasn't expecting him to answer this easily. In fact, I wasn't expecting this answer at all.
"That's horrible. I'm so sorry about your father." I say almost in a whisper.
It's easy to notice the sadness in his bright blue eyes, now turning red. I can't imagine how hard it is to lose someone like that.
"That motherf..." Luke rubs his eyes and sighs, as my hand meets his shoulder, attempting to calm him down. "The worst of all is that my mom didn't even care. She left me an my dad when I was only three. But despite all that I still had a little bit of hope she wasn't heartless and that she would care about him being gone. But she doesn't." He says, taking another drag.
"What's her name?"
"Liz. She always thought she was the queen of the world, you know? Everyone in this town knew her. But the truth is that she was fucking heartless." He releases all the anger inside his heart, my hand not leaving his soft skin. "I'm so proud of my dad, though. He was a single parent, and I understand his struggle to sustain me and take care of me. He started selling drugs all over the city so we could have a roof above our heads. I understand why he chose this way."
"I'm sure he was a great person, Luke." I say, with a light smile on my face.
"He had to take care of little Luke even after the love of his life left him. My dad was nothing like my mom. He never gave up on me. Ever."
His eyes started to fill up with tears, but I knew not even this could get a strong guy like Luke show his weakness.
"It's ok Luke."
"So that's how it started. My dad was killed right in front of my eyes by one of his partners and best friends, Tobias' dad. That's why the war between me and him started. I'll never forgive him for that."
"Now I understand the hate between you two."
"Now I'm the "leader". I didn't choose to be and I don't like being called that. I just feel like I should keep my father's legacy. This world is everything I know."
This wasn't something Luke chose. This was what he was meant to do. Period. He could have been my schoolmate, the postman, the baker, my friend's annoying boyfriend. But no. He never got to chose what he wanted to do in life. He was the leader, but the story was never about him.
"It's hard to grow up with a broken family."
"Yea. But changing the subject, I really think you should let me try that."
This whole family subject was something very uncomfortable to me and I could totally relate to it, but I don't like talking about it. So I changed the subject and say the first thing that pops in my head.
"What, this?" He glances at the blunt he's holding between his thumb and index finger.
I nod.
"No Chloe, this is too strong for you."
"So?..." I ask and look into his eyes, knowing he had something up his sleeve.
The rolling paper of his blunt was perfectly folded and fitted, making me realize that it was something Luke was used to do.
He takes it in between is lips, taking a big drag from it and making a sign for me to get closer to him.
I do as he instructs. I lean foward and his fingertips lift my chin up, our lips only inches away from meeting each other. I open my mouth slightly as he blows the smoke gently inside it, allowing me to take a taste of his little heaven.
It was strong, warm, raspy and sweet, all at the same time, and I immediatly start to feel it taking over the cells of my body before blowing the smoke out of my lungs.
"Again."
I ask, making Luke get even closer to me. My urge to taste it again leaves me inches away from Luke's velvet lips. He breathed out the smoke without allowing me to taste it, gluing his lips to mines. His hand reached my waist and pulled me closer as my rested my hands around his neck, our lips moving in perfect sync, making me feel some type of way that I never experienced before.
