A body floated up to the surface, but Meara and Katniss couldn't tell who it was yet. Finnick kept swimming, hoping it was Peeta who was still alive. Peeta suddenly emerged from the water, gasping and looking around him. Katniss let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in. Meara turned her head to see District 1 and 2 huddled together. "Okay, lets go." Finnick said, starting to swim back to the rocks. Meara followed behind Peeta, running to the forest. Peeta was first in the forest followed by Meara.
"Katniss, go, go." Finnick let her go in front. Peeta led the way as they ran further into the forest, away from 1 and 2. After a few minutes of running, Finnick said, "Okay, hold up, hold up."
Peeta and Katniss stopped. Meara handed Finnick's trident to him. Everyone kneeled on the ground, panting heavily. "God, it's hot." Peeta huffed. "We gotta find fresh water." He said, turning to his allies. Meara put her hand over Finnick's. After last night, she had no idea what their relationship was, or if there even was a relationship. Sure, they had sex, but what did Finnick think?
Suddenly, loud booming cannons pulled Meara out of her thoughts. Three times. "Well, I guess we're not holding hands anymore." Finnick chuckled. "You think thats funny?" Katniss asked him. "Every time that cannon goes off, it's music to my ears. I don't care about any of them."
"Good to hear?" Katniss pulled a sword out from her quiver. She pointed it at Finnick. Finnick, however, didn't seem to be phased. "Wanna face the career pack alone? What would Haymitch say?" Finnick looked at Katniss.
"Haymitch isn't here." Katniss replied blankly. Meara looked between the two than at Peeta. Peeta shared the same look with Meara, clearly agreeing with her. Both of them stood up. "Let's get moving." Peeta said. Katniss followed his lead. Meara walked behind Peeta as he led the way, once again. Finnick was behind her as Katniss was in the back. Peeta sliced multiple vines and plants to make a clear path. Katniss, in the back, looked around suspiciously. She noticed something Meara noticed minutes ago. It was too quiet.
As Peeta kept slicing, Meara followed. Finnick, who was concerned, turned around to see Katniss had stopped moving and was staring straight ahead. "Peeta, Meara, no!" Katniss yelled. Peeta, not hearing the warning sliced again, hitting a force field. He was flung back into Meara who went straight to the ground, hitting her head pretty hard. "Peeta? Peeta?" Katniss crawled to Peeta's unconscious body.
