Whenever Darth Vader looked at his reflection, he saw evil. The black mask was emotionless, and the face underneath held nothing but hatred and malice. The only good that resided in Darth Vader, was from the man that was trapped beneath the layers of darkness. And at the sight of the two pairs of eyes that held swirls of light purple and ocean blue, Anakin Skywalker wretched himself free from the dark side's hold.
Luke and Leia Skywalker were frozen at the end of the hallway. It had been Leia that had called out to their uncle, her terrified call travelling out into the tunnel and along the strip path. The name of her beloved uncle was filled with shock, worry and terror, as the sight of the seven-foot-tall monster standing over Obi-wan was beyond anything that Leia had seen in her nightmares. But when the black mask whipped upwards at the sound of Leia's voice, and the eyeless holes fell on the two children, the twins were frozen in fear.
Leia's trembling hands clenched Luke's robed shoulders. Her brother's mouth hung open and his blue eyes grew wide. The red blade in the man's hand made the boy's heart race and when he met his uncle's stare, Luke knew that they were in trouble.
Obi-wan had never been so ungrateful to have his neck saved from the blade of a lightsaber. He remained on the floor in the tunnel with his chin over his shoulder. He knew Leia's voice before he looked behind him, but to see her and her brother in the well-lit hallway didn't spread any relief across Obi-wan's chest. In their white attire and with horrified faces, Luke and Leia's appearance placed a crippling dread in the Jedi's stomach.
'Luke! Leia! What are you two doing?!'
To add salt to the wound, Obi-wan watched as Sol appeared from the side and took hold of her children's shoulders. The woman was looking down at the twins at first with the assumption of gaining their attention, but when she followed their wide-eyed gazes, she was met with the scene of Darth Vader standing over Obi-wan Kenobi in the chasm.
A quickening series of thuds sounded in Sol's ears. The silence in the hallway made the thumps of her pounding heartbeat unbearably loud. Her hands that were placed on both Luke and Leia's shoulders felt numb, and her mouth grew drier than the Tatooine desert. Her robes were uncomfortable against the sweat that layered her skin, and Sol had to remember to send strength to her knees to stop them from crumbling beneath her.
If Sol could see Vader's eyes, she would see that they were wide and fading from their yellow tint. The man backed away from Obi-wan with a stumbling step and his red lightsaber hung loosely in his hand. It no longer had the purpose of killing Obi-wan Kenobi and its continuous hum bounced off the walls of the tunnel in an endless spiral.
Much like Sol, Darth Vader had to keep himself standing when his knees buckled. His free hand went to clutch the railing in a desperate grip and the unlimited hate he had previously had for his ex-Master was gone.
In that singular moment, everything made sense. Vader knew why Sol hid away on Tatooine. Vader knew what it was that he sensed in the Force almost six years ago. Vader knew why Sol suddenly left Tatooine after a stormtrooper spotted a woman and two children in the city of Mos Eisley. Vader knew why Sol said that they could have had a family together, and that they still could if he left the Empire and the Emperor.
It was all for the two children that stood with their mother. It was all for the girl, who mirrored Sol with almost every feature, and for the boy, that mirrored Anakin Skywalker with his blonde hair, blue eyes, a round nose and plump lips.
'Is that... are... are they...'
Darth Vader wasn't sure who he was asking. He wanted Sol to bring the two children onto the strip so that he could get a closer look. But when he saw the way she stared at him from the hallway, Vader assumed that Sol wasn't going to step foot in the chasm. He wanted to ask Obi-wan if the little boy and little girl were his children, but the Jedi Master was unwilling to answer any questions when he was still on the floor of the strip.
