"Heavy night?" Jenna inquired as I was struggling with the coffee machine trying to get another caffeine fix.
"Yeah!" I thumped the machine in desperation. Connor and I had polished off the two bottles of his expensive wine and I was feeling it. "Had too much of a good thing last night and me head's all over the place."
Jenna came to the rescue and by pushing a few buttons and a less than delicate kick to the base of the machine had my black Americano being prepared.
"Anyone I know?" There was a distinct smirk to her face. I assumed she was referring to Taylor
"No, not Taylor! Just an old school friend with an incredible talent for choosing drinkable reds."
"Well, my surgery's been bumped to Saturday so I'm wanting to party like fuck on Friday night. Invite him along. Chloe and Elliott are up for it, but I haven't heard back from Taylor. I assumed he was with you as you didn't answer either."
"Taylor's got his sister's wedding next weekend so I doubt if he's up for it," I answered as I pulled out my phone. "Oh shite! Sorry...., I muted it because I was in company."
"Yeah, right! More like being fucked," Jenna sarcastically muttered as I unmuted my phone and checked for messages.
Oddly enough there weren't any from Taylor and I wondered if he was pissed off with me for having the date with Connor. I sat at my desk and sent him a quick text, asking if he was alright. He messaged back straight away simply asking if I was free to meet him tonight. There was no mention of Connor or any enquiry as to whether I had had a good time. I just replied 'sure' and left a load of emoji's.
When I arrived home after work Taylor was there and was busy cleaning.
He handed me a glass of wine. "I see you had a good time last night. From the mess in the bedroom and the two dirty wine glasses and TWO empty bottles.... I take it your lunch date turned out to be a much longer affair. I've put fresh sheets on the bed and the dirty ones are in the wash. I daresay that you'll be having his company again tonight so I'll just finish off and go."
"Taylor....! Don't be like that." I grabbed at his arm. "It wasn't planned ..., just something that happened. There's no need to go as I haven't made any arrangements to see him again just yet."
"What! You're nuts. He's loaded, well fit, scrubs up well..., and drives a decent motor. What more could you want?"
"Tell me you didn't..... You followed us, didn't you?"
He blushed with embarrassment. "I didn't follow. I just swung by the pub and checked that it really was Connor you were meeting with... , and that you were safe..... I know that you haven't had any trade for a while and just thought you might have been a bit on the desperate side by now."
"You didn't sleep downstairs in the car again, did you?"
Taylor laughed. "No.... Once I saw it was Connor you were meeting I left. I could tell from the body language you were both giving each other you were going to fuck, so I went home."
"Is that why you didn't message last night?"
He nodded. "I saw you turn your phone off and knew you would forget to turn it back on."
"I just muted it, Taylor.... I promised you I would never turn it off again unless it was absolutely necessary..... Is this why you're pissed off with me?"
"I'm not pissed off with you.... Just..., just trying to accept that it's not me that's going to make you happy. If you get together with Connor it means that I'm out on my ear."
