Tom ushered Taylor, Tyler and me into the function room that we had breakfast in, while female staff assisted Dad, Carol and Jennifer. Barnaby made sure that other male members of staff had forcibly escorted Saxon and Tudor away in the opposite direction before coming in behind us. He then signalled to his staff to leave the room, motioning for Tom to remain behind.

Barnaby stood in front of Dad, who was sitting at one of the tables, comforting Carol. "Mr and Mrs Clarke..... I'm Barnaby Simmonds, the duty manager... I'm so sorry that your morning has been compromised by that unnecessary disturbance. I can only apologise on behalf of all of us at the hotel, and will make sure that they are detained until the police arrive."

"The police?" Carol queried. "But they are my sons'.... Can you not just keep them away from everyone until my stepson has left?"

"I'm afraid not, Mrs Clarke," Barnaby answered. "I had hoped that, after the unpleasant events of last night, those two gentlemen would not have caused any more trouble. The deaf gentleman had assured me that he would make sure that was the case, but he was the one that attacked the gentleman over there...." he gestured towards Taylor, "....in the toilet in an unprovoked attack. Another guest witnessed the attack and alerted me."

"What do you mean by the unpleasant events of last night?" Dad asked. "I wasn't aware of any problems and certainly haven't been told of any this morning."

Barnaby looked at me, as if asking permission to relay the details of what had happened. I could sense that he felt uncomfortable in being the bearer of such disturbing information. I knew that it would have to be me to disclose everything that had occurred, however embarrassing it might be.

"Dad.... Carol.... I'm sorry but Tudor forced his way into my room last night and I was scared that he was going to hurt me. Mr. Simmonds had to find me another room to sleep in."

Dad looked at me as if in disbelief. "Why...? Why did you not call me last night?"

"Because I didn't want to spoil your wedding night!"

"Oh! Come on Freddie....!!!!! If it was something as serious as that you should have woken us both."

"I'm sorry Dad, but Saxon said he would deal with it."

"Saxon knew?" Carol asked, sounding more than surprised.

"Yes! He was bringing some wine to my room and I thought it was him when I opened the door. It wasn't. It was Tudor and he forced his way in and threatened me....  Just like he used to do."

"Freddie?" The tone of Carol's voice was questioning but not in a good way. "Why was Saxon coming to your room?"

I hesitated. That's all it took. I could tell by the expression on Dad's face that he had worked out why. I wasn't surprised, certainly not after the plethora of facts that Taylor had divulged in his spat with Saxon.

"I'd rather we discuss things privately from now on Freddie," Dad suddenly announced before turning to Barnaby. "Thank you Mr. Simmonds. I do appreciate the help you gave my son last night and ask if there is any arrangement you and I can broker in respect of my new stepsons."

As if on cue there was a knock on the function room door and a member of staff advised that the police had arrived.

The rest of the morning was spent hanging around the hotel as the police conducted their interviews.

I checked my messages. There was nothing from Connor but there were some from Jenna. Everything was fine and the operation had been successful. She also asked how the wedding had gone. I showed Taylor and we agreed to say it was eventful and would tell her more when we saw her.
