My heart was pounding. I wasn't sure if it was the awkwardness of the situation or Tom that was the cause. Either way I needed my heart to quieten down.
It was Saxon that broke the silence that seemed to be lasting an eternity. "There's no need for you to bother switching rooms for him," he stated, sounding very authoritarian. "I can stay with him tonight. That's if you want me to, of course, Freddie?" He belatedly offered.
"I would feel safer if I could move rooms." I replied, before looking, pleadingly, at Barnaby and then Tom.
For some reason Saxon didn't like that. I could see it in his eyes. Yes! His eyes were just like Tudor's. I could read those and I could read his.
"Freddie! You're making a lot of fuss about nothing." Saxon dismissively said. "No way will Tudor dare come back after the attention he's brought upon himself. If he's stupid enough to decide to come back to surprise you again he'll find me here, then he'll be the one to get a surprise."
I wasn't too sure about that. What if they both had originally arranged for Tudor to come to my room first and then Saxon to follow him later? I tried to dismiss these thoughts as nonsense but the pair of them were capable of all kinds of deceit and manipulation. I wouldn't put anything past them.
I definitely didn't want to stay in the room. I looked towards Barnaby. He must have seen the desperate look I was giving him.
He smiled kindly at me, as if he could read my thoughts. "I would be happier if you moved rooms," he said firmly just as his pager went off. "Tom can make sure no-one else will be given your new room number. That way you can have peace of mind and get a good night's sleep."
I didn't want to be left in this room on my own so, as Barnaby silenced his pager, I tugged at Saxon's sleeve to make him look at me. "Please Saxon, I'd be happier too, and would rather be on my own..., but would you stay with me until they find me a new room?"
Saxon huffed. "Moving seems so unnecessary...., but if that's what it takes to sort this out..., then fine."
I gave Barnaby a grateful smile. He smiled back. "Good. I have to go but Tom will make sure that another room is properly prepared and he'll be back to help you move." He seemed relieved, as he left the room with Tom, that a potentially difficult situation had been solved fairly easily.
Saxon chastised me as soon as Barnaby closed the door behind them. "What on earth are you playing at Freddie?" He came and sat on the bed, pulling on my arm to sit down beside him. "You knew I wouldn't be long, so why call down to Reception? The last thing our parents need is the police being called and an unpleasant scene being created by them trying to arrest Tudor."
"He was going to rape me Saxon! I could see it in his eyes."
"Aw! You're fucking paranoid. He's had too much to drink.... That's all."
"You weren't there. You didn't see the look he was giving me. I know that look. How can I ever forget it? Something needs to be done.... He can't be allowed to get away with forcing himself into my room and attacking me. You can't just sweep behaviour like that under the carpet otherwise he'll think he can do what he wants, when he wants.., and fuck the consequences."
He wasn't having any of it. He lambasted me. "Don't you dare say to your Dad that Tudor was going to rape you. I don't think it's fair for our parents to have their wedding day memories spoiled. Tudor told me earlier today that he had no feelings for you anymore whatsoever. He said what went on between you and him was in the past."
"Then why did he turn up? I was told that he wouldn't be here. You all promised. You said he wouldn't be invited."
"Aw! Come on Freddie...! We didn't promise. All we said was that it was doubtful he would come. Mum told him about the wedding, obviously he was as he's her son, but I assure you, he refused for ages to accept or acknowledge she was getting remarried. Then at the last fucking minute he changes his mind, turns up and demands to give her away. We tried everything to get him to leave and he promised he'd behave."
