{Chapter 9}

Did I... just get shot?... Why me... I did so much to survive...

"Yay! Thanks papa!" You open your closed eyes. To see a bullet hole imbedded into your chair, mere centimetres away from your neck, and it seemed like there was something where the bullet hit, there was... a bug's corpse? The realisation hits you that you didn't die, but did Rui'a father just nearly kill you because a stupid little bug?! "Hahaha! You're so jumpy!" You look over to the blonde child who's snickering at you. "Never had a gun pointed to you before?" This child... is making fun of you? For worrying about your life? You should feel disrespected but... what kind of life did she live to be so casual to say that...? Your thoughts are cut off by... Rui's father.

"Why'd you get into contact with this comrade of yours. They seem way too fragile to be any serious help." The intimidating man glares at you with suspicion, the fear from before rises back up... Especially when you see the man reach for his gun again. "Regardless of status, wealth or reputation, if they cannot do anything for us, to me, that person is an outcast."

"They're a very good informant, father."

"How so?" Rui's father lowered his gun again, what is with this guy and killing people? You cannot feel safe in this house and never did. You want to leave. Rui stayed silent. After taking a bite of his food he finally spoke up. The silence beforehand was dreadful.

"You should ask them, not me." Rui remarked as he wiped his mouth with a napkin. Did this man actually do that? Did he just throw you under the bus. Once an asshole, always an asshole apparently. With reluctance, you sit up straight and look at Rui's father. You have to bullshit something, or you're dead. What could you say? Maybe something regarding the Naganoharas? But then Rui would have suspicions about why you know about them. Leading to failure and incurring the wrath of Megumi... You shiver at the idea, but you need to focus on the matter at hand. It would've been better if Rui had just said you were a good fighter! Though... fighting Rui's dad doesn't seem favourable. Especially after what you saw when you first walked in...

You then remember the conversation you eavesdropped on a few moments ago regarding routes. You're very familiar with the layout of your city since you don't own a car and walk everywhere. An idea has popped into your head.

"Regarding your routes, I can deal with them. I know every inch of this city. Including the neighbouring cities too. If you want money laundered, drugs or anything at all, I'm the best there is. I work from the shadows, I don't like getting physical." What utter lies. Well, most of it is true. Technically... except for the money laundering and drugs business. You realise that you should be more... Business-like. So you make sure you're respectful in every movement possible and radiate confidence.

"Ha. I see... I suppose that's why you're so jumpy... You use brain over brawn, but you must prove your worth to me, I'll trust my son's word for now. Come with me to my office and we'll discuss things, if you fail what I set for you, I'll kill you and Rui, you'll no longer be under my protection. Rui froze and looked shocked for a while. Protection? Someone tugs at your trousers. "Want me to explain?" It was the little girl. She grinned at you and held your hand. "Let's go to Papa's office! I'll explain on the way!" She giggled as she dragged you off with Rui's father tailing behind in a calm and professional manner. Before the three of you fully left the room, you heard Rui's dad speak.

"Rui Kamishiro, you are not allowed to interfere with my trial for this comrade of yours. This should only take a week or so, cut contact with your... friend until then, if I even hear about you two conversing, the consequences will be enacted immediately."

"Yes father." Rui looked down at the plate infront of him, he refused to make eye contact with you. Yeah, that's right, feel the guilt, asshole. Rui's father left first while you and the little girl followed and chatted behind him.
