Her eyes shined as she looked up at the star-filled sky. Her cheeks were pink from the cold breeze from the waters, her lips slightly parted with the excitement of the stars. She was thrilled for the shiny rocks that decorated the skies! Her sharp features were evident from the moonlight; her cheekbones, her jawline. Her dark brown hair fell perfectly on her hunched shoulder as she hugged her knees to her chest. It took him a while before he realized he should offer her his jacket, to which, when he wrapped it around her frame, she was grateful for. She flashed him a small appreciative smile. Her lips were stained with the remains of her lipstick. How he wanted to kissed those lips then and forget his dark past.
"Do you know why I like the stars so much?" she asked, suddenly, excited to reveal the answer to him.
She had turn to face him and rested her head on her knees, closing her eyes as if to savor her last image of the sky, not wanting it to be tainted by something else.
"Why do you like the stars, Cora?"
"Because they're shining so brightly despite the darkness encircling them," she answered, a smile on her face.
She was happy. She is happiness. She's his happiness.
She was his star in the darkness surrounding him.
He stared at her for a moment, savoring that moment, that picture of her; calm and collected in front of the waters, under the twinkling sky, with her mental image of the stars, and that small satisfied smile on her lips.
Redemption was attainable after all. She was his saving grace.
