[Bethesda, Maryland.
Thursday, October 15, 2015.]Connor wasn't in first period the next day, much to Y/n's concern since he looked to be perfectly fine yesterday when she saw him. Well... aside from the fervent scowl that he may or may not have been giving her when she was having dinner with his family. Did he unexpectedly come down with the flu or something? 'I hope it's nothing serious...' she frowned and watched returned her attention to the video playing at the front of the classroom.
The Amoeba Sisters. Ugh, how she hated them. No offense to them — Y/n is sure that they're doing the best with their mission to demystify science with humor and all — but she can't just stand them. They were bothering. If anything, she would've preferred Bill Nye the Science Guy. Can't go wrong with him, even if it can be hard to keep up with him sometimes because of how quickly he speaks, but she digresses.
What also sucked was that no matter how Y/n tried, she couldn't pay attention to the information that she was being given from the video. Her eyes were focused on the screen, but it felt like her mind was focused elsewhere. She hoped nothing bad happened because if that was the case, then Y/n would not only have to spend the rest of her school day worrying about the Murphy family but she'd have to endure Zoe talking about it for days on end until another problem pops up.
'What a pain.' She thought.
As the narrator droned on, Y/n felt a tap on her shoulder, breaking the trance. She turned to find Kaci Davis, a classmate known for her occasional forgetfulness, she is hardly at school, and the fact Y/n always caves in when it comes to doing a large sum of her schoolwork because she seems to have trouble with saying the word 'no'. Kaci leaned towards her with a hushed tone,
"Hey, Y/n." Kaci whispered, "Do you have any notes from Mr. Lawson's speech last Friday?" That teacher is notorious for not using PowerPoint, so his students have to rely on memorizing what he is saying vocally. It sucks, but there isn't much they can do about it. "I kind of spaced out and missed some stuff," Kaci added, laughing awkwardly.
"Yeah..." Y/n trailed off. With that, She leaned down, reached into her backpack, and dug through in search of her composition book that she uses for their shared A.P. Government class.
When Y/n was finally about to retrieve it, she slid it over to Kaci, offering a subtle smile, "I swear that man talks fast as the speed of light. Thanks, Y/n, you're a lifesaver." She praised her classmate, as per usual. Was it bad that Y/n had mixed feelings about doing this? Don't get her wrong — she likes the reputation she's built from helping other people with their work, knowing it'll keep her in their good graces, but some of the praising felt like they were all just trying to butter Y/n up for the next time they'll need her assistance.
"Just give me that back before next class," Y/n mumbled, not wanting to be caught by their Biology teacher for talking during a video.
"You got it," Kaci replied.
A little while later, during third period, Y/n was loitering around in the gymnasium after dressing down for physical education, but it didn't take her long to see that none other than Connor Murphy had finally made it to school. However, Y/n has always noticed something with him as well: it's always a gamble if he is going to show up to this class, in particular. It's actually the only class he ever skips, assuming he isn't late or actually is going to school, and because of this, Connor always gets a truant (a student who stays away from school without leave or explanation).
Then again, if he ever shows up to P.E., he's most likely sitting out.
"Why's he just sitting there?" One of Y/n's friends side-eyed the boy.
"I wish I could sit out. Aren't we doing monster laps today?" Ah, monster laps. The bane of Y/n's existence. It's where instead of running around the track four times, they have to run about minty percent of the track alongside the entire school's field. It's arguably bigger and more difficult, even though their teacher — Mr. Kelly — urges that it's fair and the same.
He's so full of it.
"Hey, did you guys hear that Lindsey Wilson is throwing a party at her place tomorrow? We should totally go!" The third friend gushed, wanting nothing more than to get out of the house as opposed to staying shut in her room for the entirety of the weekend doing homework and studying.
"I don't know, guys..." Y/n trailed off, averting her gaze. "I got things to do a-and if I try lying to my dad about it, I think he'd know." There was that and Y/n heard that Lindsey Wilson's parties always get turned down by either her parents or police within a few hours. So, they're just a waste of everybody's time... and yet people still go.
"Hey!" A booming voice prompted the girls to flinch at the sudden abruptness, believing to have been caught. Even a handful of the other classmates who were waiting for the others to get ready had to look over only to find Mr. Kelly glaring at Connor who was seated in the corner of the gymnasium by the bleachers. "Murphy, hit the lockers!" He ordered. "You only got two minutes left to change." There is only so much time the students are given to do so since they all have an entire class of exercising ahead of them.
"All right!" Connor yelled back, sharing his pants when he got up from the ground and hauled all his stuff toward the locker room all the while his classmates either hid their snickers by covering their mouths, whispered comments about the boy to one another, or gave their friends surprised looks by his outburst.
"While we wait for him," Mr. Kelly started as he looked between his class and the clipboard he felt firmly in his hands. "I'll separate you all into teams. We're playing volleyball."
For the next few seconds, Y/n watched as her chances of being with one of her friends slowly decreased until they hit a whopping zero. Just when she thought it couldn't get any worse, she came to find out that she was being lumped into the same team as Connor. Of course, she was — why is she not surprised? Should she try talking about him or should she leave him alone? Whatever the case, she just hopes that he is in the mood to play some Volleyball because she really isn't in the mood to be degraded by her overzealous, competitive jock classmates.
