Flashback Chapter Part 2I decided to take Viggo up on his offer to work alongside him. It had been a few weeks. Viggo and I have been getting on great; he can be quite egotistical, and Fafnir and Viggo have this competitive relationship. The biggest problem is Viggo's older brother, Ryker. He doesn't like me at all.
Since arriving, Ryker has done nothing but make snide comments and try to make me look like an idiot in front of Viggo.
"I really don't know what his problem is, Fafnir," Y/n says, working on new weapons for the hunters. Fafnir looked at me and let out a snort. I assume in agreement. Viggo had set up an area for me to work with. However, I didn't expect Ryker to appear with a scowl. His chocolate-brown eyes glanced at the floor, refusing to make contact with me.
"Hi there, Ryker. Can I help you with something?" I asked politely when the man let out a scoff, dropping a broken sword onto Y/n's workbench.
"Fix it", grumbled Ryker as I examined the broken blade. It was made from Gronckle iron, which is durable. However, the iron rusts and erodes if Gronckle Iron isn't maintained correctly.
"I will see what I can do, but Ryker."
"What?" he growled
"Are you sure you don't want me to make you some new blades?"
Ryker said, "Do whatever you want. Just fix it", and with that, the man walked away, leaving me disgruntled and confused. What was his problem?
I looked at the blade, and after trying to fix it for the past few hours, Fafnir went away to hunt for food. I, however, couldn't fix it without making the blade less durable, so I began thinking, 'What if I combine this Gronckle Iron with another material like I did with Viggo's sword?'After spending hours on several combinations, I combined the Gronckle Iron with the Dragonproof metal. To make this work, I would have to disrupt the metals between two swords instead of one. Otherwise, it would become too heavy, and even someone as brawn as Ryker might struggle.
So, I spent hours designing and forging Ryker's new swords for the next few days. I gave them a jagged-edged look, which he might like. The blades were a blue colour due to the dragonproof metal. Looking over the blades, happy with my work. I went in search of Ryker.
It was only a short time before I found both Grimborn's talking to each other, and from what I could hear, Ryker was not happy.
"I still don't get why you invited her here, Viggo."
"Now, now, big brother."
"Don't start. She is nothing but an incompetent woman."
So he's complaining to Viggo about me. Go figure. But his attitude is starting to piss me off, I have been nothing but civil. I don't need him to like me, but this is ridiculous, so I was finally going to do something about it.
" Maybe if you, instead of bitching about me to your brother. You be a grown fucking adult and talk to me about any issues.
Ryker looked at me. "Excuse me, woman, you need to watch your tone."
"You need to watch your manner. If you treat me like shit, I will happily return the favour."
Viggo watched with amusement. Nobody except himself had stood up to Ryker.
Ryker grumbled, stomping over, snatching the two swords out of my hands. "What is this?"
"Your new swords, take 'em or fucking leave 'em."
"I asked you to fix my sword."
"It was far beyond repair, so I improved on it instead. Look, arguing like this isn't going to go
through your thick skull. So I suggest a wager."
I could tell Ryker was intrigued. "What kind of wager"
"All you have to do is land one cut anywhere on my body. Then I will admit I am nothing but an incompetent woman, but if that proves too difficult for you. You have to apologise to me."
Ryker started cackling. "Alright, lass, this will be over in a minute."
Viggo goes to interject, " Y/n. My dear, is this truly wise?"
"Viggo. I'll be fine. This is the only way I will get through to you, brute of a brother."
"I'll make it easy, lass", Ryker snarked, cheating one of the new swords.
"Ready when you are"
With that, Ryker ran forward, swinging the blade. I noticed his stance was as wide as his swing, making his moves predictable as I manoeuvred out of the way of his swing. I hear Ryker tch in annoyance, trying to swing for me again, as I just happily dodge and evade his attacks.
The look in Ryker's eyes was amusing; this man had a short fuse. "You just dodging. Can you even fight back?"
As those words left Ryker's lips, I smirk. "Fine." I grabbed my handle from my belt, which was my retractable sword. Ryker swung again, and I dodged, pressing my blade to his throat.
"The key to swordsmanship is about balance rather than strength", I say as I remove the blade. As Ryker goes to try to cut me again, Ryker is strong. However, his swings are wide and aggressive, and I could easily predict and parry each of his hits. I pressed my blade to the back of Ryker's neck, who let out a frustrated growl. With each parry, I easily knocked Ryker off balance or outmanoeuvring him easily while I still easily remained untouched.
Twirling my sword, I decided Ryker had had enough, so when he went to strike, I dodged and swept my leg under his feet, causing the 6ft 4 man to trip, losing his grip on his sword as he fell flat on his face, with his sword discarded and me pressing the tip of my sword under his chin.
I could hear Viggo clap his hands in amazement.
"I think that's the game", I say to Ryker, who scowls, but he at least didn't look like he 100% hated me anymore.
I remove my sword, holding my hand out to Ryker, who accepts as I help him to his feet.
"My dear," Viggo calls out to me. " You surprise me once more."
"Thank you, Viggo."
Ryker folds his arms and says, " You liked the swords, didn't you?" I teased as Ryker picked up one of his new swords in a huff.
"I suppose", he grunted, not wanting to admit it. "You're skilled."
"Why, thank you."
"Sorry" Ryker muttered
"What was that?" I teased, "You need to speak louder."
"Sorry", apologised Ryker, loud enough for Viggo and me to hear.
"See, little brother, you may not be the sma-" As Viggo was about to say, a certain Deathgripper landed on him, knocking him to the floor.
I covered my mouth, and a slight snicker left my lips as I glanced at Ryker, who snorted. I turned to Viggo, who was trying unsuccessfully to get Fafnir off his back. Give Ryker and I a death stare, which caused us both to laugh. Maybe Ryker isn't that bad after all.
Fafnir was happy to spoil Viggo's day again. Unfortunately, the Deathgripper was about to face the consequences as his dinner disappeared that evening, much to Fafnir's displeasure. A true rivalry was born.
A/n Finally updated. It's not the best or longest chapter, but I wanted to have Ryker and Y/n bond moment after the two disliking each other for weeks and Ryker not liking a strong woman until he gets his ass kicked. So, hardly any Viggo. Sorry guys. But Viggo versus Fafnir was born that very day. I cannot write fight scenes, so sorry for that.
