I hit the ground hard.
I laid there for a minute with my eyes closed and collected my thoughts.
What had just happened to me?
When I opened my eyes, I looked around at my new surroundings.
It was still dark but not dark enough that I couldn't see.
I was outside somewhere, laying on a dirt road that seemed to stretch out a long way.
The strange thing, however, was that everything was blue.
There seemed to be no sign of life anywhere.
Well, except for the literal skeleton standing over me.
Although, I don't believe that it classifies as living.
I sat up and gawked, wide-eyed with my mouth open, and it started to laugh.
I waited a few minutes for it to calm down.
"Where am I?"
He looked me over and seemingly took a deep breath.
"Well, kid. You failed."
I had failed? What had I failed at? I thought to myself.
"Living, kid. Walk with me."
I stood up, confused. He started down the path before us, and I quickly followed.
"Living? So, I died."
"Yes."
"Am I in hell?"
"Not exactly, kid. This is Limbo."
"Limbo?"
I retraced my steps in my head.
"Was that light I was running towards, Heaven?"
"Yes, but you've failed, so you don't get to return there yet."
"What did I fail, exactly?"
"Well, kid, each life that you live is a chance to return to Heaven. You will either pass or fail. Humans tend to fail a few times before they are able to pass. Some more than others."
"I don't remember anything.."
"No, you'll never remember."
"So, what do I do now?"
"You walk with me until your next life begins, kid."
"Why do you keep calling me Kid?"
"Well, kid, you don't even know your name."
"Okay.. What's your name then?"
"Goldfish."
"Goldfish?"
"Yes."
"How'd you end up with a name like Goldfish?"
"I don't know, that's just my name."
I began looking around. The path still led to nothing, and I couldn't tell how far we've walked.
All of a sudden, a bright light appeared.
"Wait, isn't that Heaven?"
"No, kid. Look again."
I looked at it again. It looked the same but also different. It's not as clear, not as bright.
"What is it?"
"Your next life."
He shoved me forever, and I went falling down into it.
"See you next time, Kid!"
