I have lost track of how many times I have been here. As I stand and wait for my old friend, I ponder if Heaven will ever be an option for me.
"Hey, kid."
I turn to the direction of Goldfish's voice. I take his hand and we're off.
I am tired.
When we reach our destination, I am greeted by my plethora of orbs. So many warm fireflies, so many red.
Goldfish turns to me, "You know, Kid? We've seen each other a lot."
"I know."
He begins walking and I follow. My legs ache, my feet feel like worn down soles.
Goldfish stops and a door appears, to my astonishment.
"What is that?!"
"Your destination has changed, Kid."
He opens the door and we walk into what feels like a room, only it's still the dark void. There's a glowing blue table, sitting in what feels like the middle of the room. He beckons me to come sit.
What a relief it was to sit.
"We've been doing this for a long time, Kid. I'm afraid this will be the last time."
"What's going to happen to me?"
"That's something you'll have to find out. When we walk out of here, you will be given one last life. This will also be the last time that you see me."
"This is it? The last time?"
"That's right, Kid. I'm gonna miss ya."
I took a deep breath and nodded at him.
He then stood up from the table and walked to the door. He opened it and I stepped out behind him. In front of us was my next life. My last life. I turned to him and he nodded. I hugged the old bag of bones. He hugged me back briefly before he shoved me backwards.
"It's time for me to retire, Kid."
