Five's POV

I woken up to the sound of my phone vibrating. I glanced at Y/n. She was asleep. Her body was covered by the silky duvet. I gently kissed her arm before reaching for my phone. It was twelve past four in the morning. I opened a text from Zachary that said BLACK. It was our code for emergencies. Different colors for different cases. Black meant that he had something essential to tell me, that there may be a life-threatening danger. I got up from the bed and quietly blink into to the library.

"Five?" I heard his deep voice through the speaker.

I stood by the window, gaze fixed on Manhattan that never sleeps. "What is it?" I said, my voice lowered.

"Sorry to disturb you at this hour, but we have a situation."

"What kind of situation?"

"I have intel from my source that someone is after Y/n."

"What?" I frowned, concerned.

"Allegedly, someone paid them to get Y/n. I suspect they may try their chances as the event."

"Someone?"

"We haven't established that yet."

"I want to know who. I want details, Zachary."

"Sure. I'm on it."

"Reinforce the security for the event. I want my people there," I said, my voice commanding. "Track them down. It's time to put my plan into action, and I want no interruptions, clear?"

"Clear," he replied, his tone serious.

I hang up the phone, running my fingers through my hair. I took a deep breath, putting together the pieces of my strategy. I knew what I had to do to keep Y/n safe. And I was determined to succeed, no matter the price.
She was my woman now, and I'd kill for her. Die for her.

A FEW HOURS LATER, every station was airing the news about my family's annual event. I walked out my bedroom, buttoning up the formal black blazer, and as I approached the living room, the voice of the lady on the news was being louder. I heard my last name mentioned. She couldn't miss out on the gossip that I was supposed to make an appearance with Y/n, the daughter of our family's long-standing enemy, as she said it. I rolled my eyes and switched off the TV. I checked the tire on my watch. It's been two hours since Y/n and a stylist I hired for her locked themselves in one of the bedrooms. I knew this evening was going to be unique, so I hired a stylist to help Y/n get ready for my family's event.

The sound of the knocking snapped me back from my thoughts. "Five? It's me, Zachary." His voice rumbled through the door.

"Come on in."

"Hey?" His vibrant voice filled the living room as he entered, dressed up.

It was the first time I'd seen him in a suit, and I wouldn't help but tease. "Who are you, and what did you do to Zachary?" I said, my brow raised as I checked him, head to toe. He wore an elegant navy-blue suit.

"Very funny." He rolled his light brown-with greenish-eyes.

I chucked, amused at his annoyance. I knew he wasn't the type to dress up. He preferred a street gangsta style. "What? I never thought I'd see you so posh."

"Please, just drop it." He let out a sigh. "You know it's just to blend in. I hate suits. Or ties."

"You're not even wearing a tie," I joked. It was way too amusing to see him irate because of a suit. "The thing you have around your neck is a bow tie."

"Yeah, whatever. Same shit."

I shook my head, grinning. "Alright, enough." I cleared my throat. "We need to be focused. Are our men here?"

He nodded.

"Good. I don't want any surprises. Today is the day. I'm going to finish all of this," I stated, and Zachary frowned.

"What exactly is your plan?" He tilted his head, watching me. His hands clasped on his abdomen.

"You'll see," i replied. I hadn't told anyone about my plans, not even Zachary. I couldn't let it leak, and walls have ears. Growing up in the Umbrella Academy, you take every possible precaution. You are never safe. Adrenaline accompanies you even when you sleep. "Your job is to guard her, Zachary. With your life."

He nodded, fully aware of the responsibility he was accepting.

"Mr. Hargreeves. We're done. I turned to face the green-headed hair woman, smiling at me politely. She held a bagful of brushes and some other unknown-to-me objects in her hand.

"Thank you, Kate," I said, handing her the envelope. "Here's the check."

"Anything." She smiled before making her way out.

I wanted to go to the room where Y/n was getting ready, but I stood frozen in time as she walked into the living room. My eyes grew wide as I watched her casually walking out of the room as she took slow steps. She said as wearing a full-sparking nude dress with two off the shoulders straps. I was mesmerized by her beauty, and apparently, so was Zachary. I glanced at him from the corner of my eye. He was speechless, looking at Y/n in a way I found disturbing. As if he wished she were his.

"Cat got your tongue?" Y/n said teasingly, a broad smile forming on her glossy nude lips.

Zachary cleared his throat. His gaze dropped to the ground for a short moment before he looked at me. "I'll be around, Five." I nodded, and he set his gaze on Y/n. His body was tense: "You look beautiful, Miss Hargreeves."

"Thanks, Zachary," Y/n said softly, and Zachary pressed his lips together, nodding, and his gaze dropped again.

"Excuse me," he said before leavening, avoiding both of our gazes.

I found the situation weird, but I assumed he was just intimidated by Y/n's presence or her angelic beauty. Or at least, that was what I wanted to believe.

"Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here?" I said, walking toward Y/n with a provocative grin on my face.

"Forget it, Five!" Y/n exclaimed, her eyes brightening up. "I won't let you ruin my look."

I chuckled, sliding my hands around her waist. "You know me too well."

"Mm-hmm," she muttered, wrapping her hands around my neck locked.

"You look stunning," i whispered, stealing a kiss from her lips. "We should get going because if we stay here any longer, I might rip that dress off of you."

"You're unbelievable!" She giggled before I grabbed her hand and led her downstairs, where Zachary, who was our driver and Y/n's bodyguard for the night, was waiting for us.

I apologize for the very short chapter. I kinda ran out of ideas for this chapter, but next chapter will be WAY better with drama and draw-dropping moments. Hope you still luv this chapter <33
