As I left the hospital, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket.

Jake.

I quickly answer it and put my phone to my ear.
"Hey sweetie, I'm just on my way out I will be home soon." I say, carefully placing the phone between my shoulder and my ear so I can find my car keys.

"I've been waiting for over 2 hours, babe." He says through gritted teeth and I can tell that there is gonna be an argument tonight.

"I had a surgery that ran over." I lie. As I hear him begin to shout I pull the phone away from my ear and unlock my car and get in, before placing the phone to my ear again, hoping he has stopped shouting.

"Charlotte, it's unexceptable. I have been waiting in the living room for ages waiting for you to come home and make dinner for me." He huffs before continuing, "and the home called, your father has had an accident and they won't stop calling so I told them that you would be there soon."

I stop what I am doing.

"He's had a fall?"

"Yes. Charlotte when are you getting home? I am hungry."

"Is he okay? Did they-"

"I don't know I didn't  stay on the phone to find out."

"Why not?"

"Because I was setting up a surprise for you."

"A surprise? But-"

"I know you said you hate them but I thought you wouldn't mind on this one occasion because it is a good one. And you will find out what it is once you have gone to see your dad and made me dinner." He says quickly, brushing me off. "I love you, see you later." And with that he hangs up.

I sit in my car for a second to let all that information seep in.

Okay, so. Dad fell, I have to make dinner again and Jake has a surprise for me.

I take a deep breath and head to the home to see my dad. By the time I get there it is dark outside and has begun to rain again.

I walk to the reception and wait for someone to see me. But no one does. I wait a couple more minutes but nothing.

Come to think of it, there is no staff walking around at all. Where the hell is everyone?

I slowly walk down the corridor, hoping I might see someone who could help me. But as I am walking I hear someone yelling.

Oh god. Is it my dad?

I start to quicken my pace as the noises become louder and louder which causes me to change my walk into a run.

No no no no, please be okay.

My head is filled with horrible thoughts and images of what may have happened. I can barely see anything as the panic begins to really set in. I feel tears prick my eyes and air stop from entering my lungs.
