"No." is all i say in reply.
The weight of my words hung in the air, a finality settling over us like a shroud. Jake's face contorted in a mix of anguish and resignation as he realized the gravity of my decision. The room felt heavy with the unspoken goodbye that lingered between us, a tangible reminder of the love that had once bound us together now shattered beyond repair.
As I turned away from him, a single tear escaped my eye, tracing a wet path down my cheek. I refused to look back, knowing that to do so would only reopen wounds that may never fully heal. With one last heavy sigh, I gathered what little belongings I could carry and made my way towards the door.
Jake's voice followed me, a whisper filled with regret and sorrow. "I love you," he said, the words hanging in the air like a plea for forgiveness that would never come.
"No you don't. If you did you wouldn't have done this to me." I pause for a moment, "I'll be back to get my things later."
The sound of the door closing behind me echoed through the hallway, a final punctuation mark to the end of a chapter in my life. Each step I took away from our apartment felt like shedding a layer of skin, leaving behind the pain and heartache that had accumulated over time. The weight on my shoulders lifted with each passing moment, replaced by a sense of liberation mingled with sorrow.
As I descended the stairs, the world outside beckoned to me with the promise of a fresh start, a blank canvas waiting to be painted with new memories and experiences. The cool evening air brushed against my skin, carrying with it a sense of freedom that I hadn't felt in far too long.
I reached the street, uncertain of where my path would lead next but resolute in the knowledge that I was finally free from the confines of a toxic relationship. The city lights twinkled like distant stars, guiding me towards an unknown future filled with possibilities and potential.
With a deep breath, I walked towards my car, placed my stuff in the back seat and called Meredith.
No answer.
I called Nat.
No answer.
Fuck.
I mean it was 1 O'clock in the morning, they would probably be asleep. I had to think of where I was going to go and sadly only one place came to mind.
The hospital.
~~~~~~
I turned on the ignition and began to drive towards the place I knew so well, the familiar route now etched into my muscle memory from countless previous visits. The empty streets whispered their secrets to me as I navigated through the shadows of the night, each passing moment bringing me closer to the one person who had always been a constant in my life.
Parking in the same spot I always did, I took a moment to gather my thoughts before entering the building that held both solace and sorrow for me.
The fluorescent lights buzzed above me as I walked towards the elevator, the constant hum acting as a soothing anchor in the midst of my chaotic thoughts. With a soft chime, the doors opened and revealed the all-too-familiar sight of hospital hallways extending out like an infinite maze of recollections.
