A collection of disparate voices spoke in broken syllables as Elizabeth flicked through the tv channels, only half looking at what was flashing on the screen as she tucked the blanket beneath her dad's chin with her free hand. The two of them were nestled in Maria's hoard of throw pillows, sinking into the well-loved couch as rain battered the windows.
It had been two days since the wedding, and Elizabeth was still licking her wounds.
Shiv and Tom's Honeymoon had been intended as a stretch on uninterrupted quality time that she could spend with her dad, and while it was serving its purpose in that respect, it was also under very different circumstances than she had expected. He spent most of the time asleep, while she steeped in her misery about everything that had happened.
And then there was the fact that Shiv had hopped on a plane and left the threat of losing her job hanging over her head. Just before the newlyweds had got on their flight, the two of them had had a brief phone call, but all she'd had to say to Elizabeth was that they would 'have a talk' when she got back.
It was only when she had to confront the possibility that she could be fired, that Elizabeth realized how truly dependent she had become on her job. It was high-pressure and often infuriating, but it had kept her busy when she'd needed distracting the most. Sitting in the silence of the brownstone with her father, made Elizabeth realise quite how alone she would soon become. And she couldn't rely on Maria. As lovely as she was, there was every chance she would distance herself after her dad passed away.
It was a cruel twist of fate that so many years after Logan Roy had ripped her family apart, she was terrified of losing the connection she had to his.
Tom had tried to call her the morning after the wedding, but she'd already been on a plane back to New York, so had missed it. He'd left a short and slightly hushed voicemail which had made her think Shiv was probably nearby:
'Hey, uh, I just wanted to tell you to- you know, look after yourself, don't go sinking into the Stygian depths of despair. I'll be thinking of you- and your dad. Okay, bye.'
And then there had been the messages from Roman.
[ ROMAN: Are you still alive, or did Shiv bury your body beneath the castle? ]
