Whether the foundations of the Roy Dynasty had ever been structurally sound, was questionable. But after Kendall's failed coup, the cracks that had formed had widened into gaping fissures large enough for all to see. And the damning reality that the turmoil had reached the public consciousness, was impressed upon Elizabeth by the newsstand she had passed on her way to Shiv's apartment.
The tiny, unimposing stall sat proudly on the sidewalk, remaining steadfast as towering behemoths of glass stared down at it imperiously, outraged at the gall to distribute a piece of media that slandered the beings whose money had allowed them to reach the clouds. Its shelves were full of the newest edition of The New York Magazine, and the sight of them had been what had stopped Elizabeth in her tracks.
'The Crack Up: The Splintering of the Roy's and the Fracturing of America.'
The hyperbolic headline was plastered on a cover that depicted the Roy's under broken glass. The family behind one of the world's largest media empires trapped behind a cracked screen, the optics of their family—and therefore Waystar | Royco—distorted by recent events.
Only when a car horn blared at her back did Elizabeth realise how long she had been staring at the magazine, the coffee cup in her other hand having lost a considerable amount of its heat since she'd stopped moving. The glossy paper clung to the pads of her fingers as she put it back, urging her not to let go, to take the incendiary material with her to meet Shiv and Tom. She resisted and as she stepped away, a whole shelf of the Roy's eyes followed her.
Almost a month had passed since the vote of no confidence. A quiet Christmas with her dad and Maria had come and gone, Kendall had disappeared into obscurity and Nate was trying to tempt Shiv into quitting Joyce's team to work with him for his political candidate, Gil Eavis.
And yet, every time she thought the most outlandish thing possible had already occurred, something else cropped up to punish her naivete.
Before Elizabeth had been distracted, she had been on her way to her boss's apartment. They were taking a car to the airport, bound for New Mexico where Connor's ranch was located.
The Roy's were going to do family therapy.
None of it had been prompted by any actual desire on Logan's part to make amends with his children, but because a few days prior he'd been walking into the Waystar building and had been accosted with a balloon full of urine.
