|| CHAPTER 13 – Nothing Changes ||

(Season 2 Ep 4 – 'Saferoom')

---

If the start of Elizabeth's morning was any indication of how the rest of the day was going to go, she needed to prepare herself for some sort of catastrophe.

To enter to shimmering glass monolith that was the Waystar Royco building, she'd had to be escorted through a metal barricade by police, who were standing guard against two groups of incensed protesters.

Half were there in support of ATN news anchor, Mark Ravenhead, after a video had been leaked of him at conference with known fascists when he was younger. The second group was Antifa—an anti-fascist organisation who looked far more ominous despite their more justified cause—who were all dressed in black, waving around banners with 'rise up against fascism' written in red paint, urgent against the white material.

There was a frisson of violence in the air; a pot that was threatening to boil over thanks to the zealous flame that heated it.

And things hadn't improved once she'd managed to get inside.

After returning from the company hunting retreat in Hungary, not only had Logan seemingly quelled any and all dissent to his idea of acquiring Pierce, he had called Shiv to tell her it was 'time to bring her in.' Which was what had brought them to the building that morning.

The unease that the protesters had wrought within Elizabeth, had been compounded when Logan had refused to meet with Shiv if she was in the room, and for the first time in the year that Elizabeth had worked for her, Shiv had let someone send her away.

Which left her sitting outside Logan's office, occupying a leather couch that was too expensive to be comfortable, looking through the glass wall as the father and daughter toasted glasses of champagne.

Dread was swelling within her like a rising tide. There was no end to this that wasn't Shiv being crushed with disappointment, but Elizabeth had vowed to have her back in anything and everything she did now. She had voiced her concern and now she just had to sit back and watch.

As she pretended to be focusing on her laptop that was balanced on her legs, Elizabeth's phone vibrated in her blazer pocket.

Pulling her eyes away from Shiv and Logan, she freed her phone and couldn't help but smile at the message she'd received.

[ROMAN: I've discovered a new circle of hell]

Another thing that had transpired during the hunting trip, was that Roman's attempts to help with the deal by contacting Naomi Pierce had seriously backfired. Kendall had somehow found out about what he'd done and revealed all to their father.

Logan had wanted a choreographed, surprise attack, but now the Pierce's knew they were coming and despite his good intentions, Roman's had been sent on a management training programme as part of his penance.
