"Mamma, why is she always sleeping?" little Dev pointed at the two year old Pallu who was sleeping deeply on his mother's lap, creating sparks of jealousy inside that five year old mind.

"Shh Dev, that's not the way to talk about someone. She is our guest." she whispered back to her son.

"But you are mine, mamma."

"C'mon Dev, today papa will make you sleep. Otherwise you will wake up that poor child."

"Is she gonna stay with us?" he asked as his papa made his bed.

"Yes, for two days. She is my best friend's daughter. Her parents are out of town and she is sick. She can't travel. So she is staying with us. Be nice to her Dev."

Dev pouted but mentally noted that she is sick.

The next day, when Pallu opened her little eyes, she saw two curious eyes looking at her. He smiled seeing that she is awake.

"Hi Pallu, I am Dev!"

And that was their beginning.

2 years later

"Get up. She is sitting with me. Right Pallu?"

"Ha Dev. I told him that it's your place. But he didn't listened to me."

The six year old boy who was sitting next to her got up and gave Dev an angry glare. He ignored it and sat next to his Pallu in the mess.

"Pallu, you know right? That we are best friends and we should always stay together?"

"Ha Dev, even mamma says that I should always listen to you when I am in school."

"Good. Because we may fight, I may get angry with you but we will always stick to each other."

She smiled widely showing her toothy grin and Dev wrapped her in a protective hug.

3 years later

"Happy b'day bacha!" Dev's mother hugged Pallu and she saw Dev coming to her direction along with his Papa.

"Thank you aunty. Uncle, can I take Dev with me? I need to show him my presents."

Before he could reply, Dev nodded and went upstairs with her.

"These two went after us. Look at them. Just like we became best friends in our childhood, Dev and Pallu are already friends for a lifetime." her father said proudly looking at the two kids.

"Ha yaar, every time when  he comes back from school, he is like, today me and Pallu did this, me and Pallu did that, Pallu won the race today etc. My boy can't stay away from that little princess of yours."

"By the way, when are you guys going to Jaipur for the trip?" her mother asked them.

"Day after tomorrow. I don't know how will he react when he gets to know that he won't be able to see his friend for the next one week." his mother sighed.

"The same goes for her too."

"Pallu, don't cry. I will bring you lot of toys when I come back. I will even get your favorite bangles for you."

She looked at her Dev with teary eyes.

"You won't forget me right?"

"I ? Forgetting you? I would rather prefer to die Pallu."

She hugged him tightly.

"Come back soon Dev."

"I will!"

They next two days went calmly but she noticed that the atmosphere was getting tensed by the third day. Her parents were worried most of the time. They got calls every now and then. Sometimes they called someone with tension filled faces. The 7 year old child didn't understood anything. She patiently waited for her Dev's return.

But on the fourth night, her parents came to her. Their face was gloomy and they sat next to her. Her mother hugged her tightly and said:

"Dev's parents are gone Pallu!"

"Gone? Where? Jaipur right?"

"No. They are gone forever."

"But Dev told me that he will come back soon. He even promised me to bring my favorite bangles."

Her mother couldn't control her emotions and hugged her even more tightly. Her father too cried his heart out and back then, the little Pallu didn't understood why her parents are crying like that.

But it was just the beginning of the tale; a tale filled with mystery, blood and unanswered questions!
