"how about we head to a motel for the night, and get you cleaned up and fed?" I suggested as i started the car. She nodded and we were off again but at normal speeds. But that didnt stop me from checking the mirrors every now and again.

"is there anything you want to eat? Burger? Fries? Chicken? Pizza?" She looked confused.

"I used to always get nuggets and tots..." she whispered referring to chicken nuggets and tater tots.

"chicken and fries it is." I smiled at her and drove. After a while we reached a little fast-food restaurant that was conveniently next to a thrifty store. I glanced at Amelia. She couldn't go in the store looking like that. People might think I was abusing her!

"hey Amelia?" I asked as I shut off the car after parking. She glanced at me. "I'm going to keep the car on and run inside these two stores to get a few things. When I exit the car I'm going to need to you to be a brave girl and wait for me to come back okay? You think you can do that for me?" I asked. She nodded.

"great. I won't be long. Lock the doors with that button over there," I said pointing at the lock button. "when I get out the car, and don't unlock it for anyone but me. Be careful not to push any buttons okay? I'll be right back." and with that I sprinted out the car and after making sure I heard the sound of the lock setting in place I ran into the thrifty store and bought some clothes for us both and cleaning supplies and then the food and soon we were back on the road looking for a motel to crash at for the night.

This was a cute little town that looked familiar to me in some way. As we continued to look for a place, with Amelia looking out the window for a motel on her side, I saw a little convenience store and the name of it sent a jolt of recognition me. This town was so familiar because it was the town right next to where I used to live at. I remember heading to that convenience store one day with Elena. My heart tightened as I thought about her but as I did so many times before I quickly tossed that thought and feeling to the side.

I think if my memory is correct there was a motel about three minutes out. Sure enough there it was. Lee's motel. I parked the car and glanced at Amelia. "ready? I'm going to go in and get us a room. Wait here like we did at the store and I'll come out to get you okay?" I asked her and headed inside the old but decent clean motel office. The door jingles as it opened and an older guy in his fourties came out from the back.

"welcome to lee's motel would you like a room?" his voice was raspy. Probably from one too many cigars.

"um yes please. How much is it per night?" I asked.

"well, mama usually rents 'em out at twenty per night. For basic room. Thirty five for one with a kitchen."

"ill take one with a kitchen please. Do you have any two bedrooms?" I asked.

"yeah but that 'er be fifteen extra dollars."

"Bernie quit your lyin to my darn customers!" a older lady who looked like the guy she called Bernie, which must be his mom, came from the back and walked up to the counter. Her grey / white hair was braided neatly down her back and her aged face looked motherly.

"don't mind him dearie he's just foolin around wit' cha. just thirty five for the room you asked for. How many people you got here with you? I don't want a lot of young folk here. Bad enough I gots a problem with them college kids up at the university from time to time coming here and throwing parties."

"its just me and a little girl."

"hmmm...how many nights you want here?" she asked.

"well I was thinking around the month mark. I'm looking to settle down while I find a job and take care of a few things." I stated I shifted on my feet for two reasons. I was uncomfortable with the way Bernie was eyeing me and I didn't want Amelia waiting in the car for long. After everything I have been through it's hard for me to feel comfortable around people. Especially men. The woman sensed my discomfort and turned to her son.
