MoonwatcherMoonwatcher felt a anxious sigh escape her lips as she soared through the open sky, gently guiding her bird through the passing clouds. She was excited to attend the Jade Mountain Flight Academy; how could she not be? She had been selected by Queen Glory herself as one of five NightWings who had been chosen to represent her tribe. It was truly a great honor! And yet, despite that, she couldn't help the knot in her stomach that churned with nervousness.
If she had to be honest, the only reason she'd actually accepted the offer was because of her friend Kinkajou's insistance. For days, Moon had been forced to endure Kinkajou's nonstop badgering as the enthusiastic RainWing had begged her relentlessly.
"Oh, please, Moon? It'll be fun! Promise! We'll get to see each other every day, and fly together too!" Kinkajou had weedled.
"I don't know, Kinkajou. I mean...only the best pilots attend Jade Mountain, and I don't...I mean, I don't think-" Moon Started.
"Nonsense! You're like, the best pilot I know! I've seen the way you fly, and it's really impressive!"
Moon smiled shyly at the RainWing. She appreciated the kind words, but it still felt like that was hard to believe. After all, there were several NightWings in the Rainforest Kingdom that had flown during the war; real combat veterans. Surely her feeble skills weren't anywhere near as impressive as theirs undoubtedly were.
Although, she admitted to herself, it's not like you've ever actually seen them fly before. It had been a little over a year since the NightWing exodus, when a massive geothermal disaster had forced the NightWings to abandon their isolated island kingdom. They'd fled into the Rainforest territories, and sworn themselves to Queen Glory. However, very few NightWings had volunteered to join the newly established Rain/Night Air Force, and it was under Moon's impression that many NightWings still harbored bitter thoughts at the notion of serving a RainWing queen.
There were, however, a few NightWings who had volunteered, even if not wholeheartedly. They were all about Moon's age, if not a little older, but aside from that, she didn't really know much about them. That was because most of the time, the other NightWings avoided her. Whenever she approached, they would always shoot her dirty looks before quickly wandering off, grumbling to themselves. More than once, Moon had felt the jealousy radiating from their thoughts. She could feel their disdain towards her whenever she was around them. They hated her because she was different; she was shy, awkward, stammered too much, and she had escaped the geothermal fallout that had ravaged the NightWing tribe for so many years. In their eyes, Moon was an outcast, not a NightWing at all.
That was why Kinkajou had finally convinced Moon to join her at the Academy. Kinkajou was the first dragon Moon had met, aside from her mother, who didn't look at Moon as if she was a disgraceful outcast. Instead, she looked at Moon as if she could be a friend, and that's exactly what they had become.
