Ships that pass in the night.

Up in the sky, the great dark clouds are massing;

I look far out into the developing night, Where I can hear a solemn booming gun.

And catch the gleaming of a random light,
That tells me that the ship I seek is passing, passing.

My tearful eyes
my soul's deep hurt is glassing;

I stretch my hands imploring, cry aloud,
My voice falls dead a foot from my own lips, And but its ghost doth reach that vessel, passing, passing.

0 Earth, O Sky, O Ocean, both surpassing,
O heart of mine, O soul that dreads the dark!
Is there no hope for me? Is there no way
That I may sight and check that speeding bark Prich out of sight and sound is passing, passing?

Ships that pass in the night.

That's how Daryl felt, like passing ships in the night, as he watched in horror while his highschool sweetheart stood on the outskirts of the overrun safe haven.

Their eyes locked briefly and Daryl saw a whirlwind of memories pass through him.

Then he saw it.

What he assumed was a backpack was a baby carrier. Inside was a small, young girl.

In Sofías hand was a small revolver. The hammer pulled and her finger on the trigger

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Sofia said, to a man who was lying on the ground, "I'm sorry, dad." She whispered, watching as the man gripped his bloody shoulder, his eyes squeezed shut.

A feeling that was far too familiar for Daryl.

Mercy killing a loved one - like you would a sick dog.

Sofia pulled the trigger, the bullet landing between the man's eyes

"Sofía!"

Sofía turned, looking at the young girl in the passengers seat of the blue ford pick up truck. Sofía ran to the vehicle, climbing in the drivers seat. She locked the doors, "Help me." She begged, fumbling to take off the baby carrier

"I got her! Drive!" Isabela said, holding Iris. She watched Sofía fumble with the keys, "Now!"

"I just killed dad! Give me a minute!" Sofía begged, "I fucking... hate driving stick!" She wept quietly, driving down the road.

Unsure of where to go, Sofía followed a gaggle of cars, which were all trailing after a large RV.

Isabela cradled Iris, kissing her temple, "We're gonna be okay." She reassured the baby

Sofía pulled the truck up behind the RV. She tucked her hair behind her ear, "Stay here." She whispered, leaning over and kissing Isabela's temple before doing the same for Iris. She climbed out of the car, tucking her revolver into the waist of her jeans

"Sofía!"

"Dale! I knew I made the good choice following you." Sofía relaxed, walking over to him

"Where's your dad?" Dale asked, hugging Sofía tightly

Sofía shook her head, "Didn't make it." She whispered, wiping her eyes. She squeezed him tightly before pulling away. She looked over her shoulders at a young family before looking around at the group.
