The sun dipped below the horizon, the trees twisting into long shadows as Meg sprinted along the winding trail. Her footsteps pounded the earth like a rhythmic heartbeat, echoing her wild spirit.
She'd always been a live wire, like a broken powerline sparking and sizzling out of control. People said it was her mother's tenacity that instilled a fierce streak in her, but perhaps it was her absentee father that lit the first flame.Back in school, Meg had excelled for a while until her explosive nature got her in a couple fights. It was the athletics coach who saw the untamed potential within her and encouraged Meg to harness her energy on the track. So she traded rebellion for running, turning turmoil into a runners high.
High school hailed Meg as a star, and a college scholarship gleamed on the horizon, promising an escape. But when her mother's health took a turn for the worse, Meg chose to sacrifice her dreams to care for the woman who had raised her.
