Pursuit - Blood - Shock
I stood there, the warm winds carrying away the ashes of the amulet, its words still echoing in my mind. The surreal sight of my lifeless body, exactly where I had fallen, left me questioning the reality of it all.
If none of this was real, what did it mean? Was it a dream? Was I in a coma?
In an attempt to shake myself awake from this nightmare, I slapped my cheek hard enough to leave a stinging print, then did the same to the other.
"WAKE UP!" I screamed, but my desperate plea was met with the haunting hum of the Huntress.
Beyond the line of trees, her red pulsing glow drew near.
I raised my crossbow determined to strike her down despite the tremor in my hands. I could still feel the burning gash on my arm from the axe wound, the blood having long dried.
"Come on, you psycho bitch, just a little closer."
RESOLUTION
Slowly, I plucked one of the arrows from the back of my shorts, loaded it, and observed as the Huntress paused, tilting her head as she materialized an axe from the shadows. I wasn't foolish enough to wait for her to finish conjuring it from the void; this wasn't a bad slasher flick.
I launched my arrow, aiming straight for her heart, and it hit her, piercing her chest.
The axe dissipated before she could grasp it, and her haunting hum ceased, replaced by a deafening silence.
Without lingering, I bolted into the forest, not bothering to attempt crossing the river.
Neon flashes threatened to blind me, thoughts slithered into my mind, the ache at the back of my head intensifying. I saw all those I had cared about and all the ways they had hurt me. My father leaving before he had a chance to love me, my mother's death robbing me of my youth. Tyler viewing me as nothing more than arm candy, Hunter tossing me towards death to save Jessica.
None of them truly cared about me.
