Pursuit - Protection - Distract
For the first time in my life, I was sick of running. My feet bled, and my shoes had nearly been turned to ribbons. Jumping over a dead tree log, I almost tumbled over another upon landing.
Branches scraped at my already wounded arm, but only a hiss slipped from my lips.
I was pissed. I was over it. I wanted out.
But did I really?
Was this nightmare any different from the one I had been living at home? My mother's decomposing corpse staining every wallpaper with the stench of death. The cabin was supposed to be the start of something new, a place to forget, to begin anew.
Was going back even worth it?
The humming returned. I couldn't see her heartbeat, which meant I still had time.
That's when I saw Tyler and The Huntress getting much too close. I wasn't sure if he saw me too but I couldn't risk her getting him.
I had to distract her.
I loaded my last arrow... and aimed.
RESOLUTION
The arrow sliced through the wind in a sharp whistle, embedding into the Huntress's back. She redirected her attention to me, and I winked—whether at Tyler or the Huntress depended on who was looking.
I turned sharply on my heels, sucked in a breath, and dashed into the woods with her hot on my trail.
A memory slithered into my mind, and I realized I was smiling as I ran. The sharp burn of every breath made me feel alive. I realize now that I loved the chase, the danger, and with each new pang of fear and stress coiling into my gut, I felt alive—better than I had in months.
I had a purpose, and it was survival.
