Chapter 29

Maverick

"You really want me to be your girlfriend?"

"I know it seems rather soon, but yes."

"I am glad that you asked."

"Do you think that we can make amends, Maverick?"

I looked at my father and shrugged. "I really don't know. Not only did you hurt mom, but you hurt your kids."

"I know. I've made a few too many mistakes."

"To say the least."

"Danny, I am beyond stupid doing this, but this is your last chance."

"Really?"

Lexie nodded before looking at me. "I mean... if that's okay with you."

"You're a big girl, Lexie. You can make your own decisions."

"If you mess up again, we are completely done."

"Thank you. Mav, what about you?"

"I'll be an adult and do the same. If I find out that you cheat on Lexie another time, I will also cut you out of my life and you will never be able to see Andrew."

He nodded. "Thank you. You guys have no idea how much this means to me."

"Don't make us regret making this decision, dad."

"I promise that I will keep my promise, Mav."

"Would you guys like to meet for dinner tomorrow?"

"Sure. If Anna would like to anyways."

Anna nodded. "Sure. I would like that."

"Do you think that you could speak to Callie?"

"She wants nothing to do with you, dad. I can send a text but that's all that I can do."

I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and sent Callie a text: Going to dinner with Anna to meet with dad and Lexie. If you and Derek want to join us, you can.

Two minutes later, she responded: NO! I want NOTHING to do with him.

Maverick: Figured that I would ask.

Callie: You're giving him another chance?

Maverick: One more.

Callie: Lexie is giving him another chance too?

Maverick: Yeah.

Callie: Good luck. I will most definitely not be showing up.

"She said no."

My father sighed. "It was worth a shot. But we'll see you guys tomorrow."

"Sounds good."

After my father and Lexie left, we went back inside and sat on the couch. "I am glad that we don't have work tomorrow."

"Me too."

"And I also am glad that you asked me out."

"Me too. I know that it is rather soon, but I didn't want to wait."

Anna smiled and put her head on my shoulder. "Not at all. I have liked you for two years and my dreams have finally come true."

"Just don't make me regret it."

"Never."

"Because I don't put up with cheaters."

Anna shook her head. "I have never cheated. I've been cheated on, but I have never."

"Me neither."

"And I know that you have trust issues, but I will help you with that."

After several hours of talking, Anna ended up falling asleep in my bed and the only thing I could hope for was a fresh start.
