WILL POV
"Great to have you back, buddy," Our gym teacher, Caleb, shook my hand when we ran into each other in the teacher's lounge my first day back at work. "So, fill me in! I got your texts but I need more info. How was paternity leave?"
"Man, I wish I had more time but was really thankful for the week I got." I laughed and swiped on my phone to show off the latest picture I had of Milo from about 4 this morning after he ate. My little guy was curled up with Sophie while she grinned at him, even the photograph causing my heart to flutter.
"Milo was 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and 21 inches long. Oh, and he has a thatch of dark hair like a Mohawk that sticks up just like I did as a baby. The delivery was textbook and he was born just after midnight on Saturday morning then we were home by Sunday afternoon." I grinned at the soft expression on Caleb's face as I continued, "Sophie is incredible. She's getting rest when she can and nursing every 2 or 3 hours plus pumping so we have a growing stash of breastmilk in the freezer already. I've been able to bottle feed Milo a couple times, too, which is just a really special time. Addison is helping out as much as she can but has to get ready for Cosmetology school starting next week so my apartment is kind of hers now."
"How do you feel?"
I thought a moment and finally answered, "Like everything is how it should be. Let's be honest here, Caleb, I never had a single doubt that Milo was my son. Seeing ultrasounds that were identical to some from before I was born just confirmed that. I never needed a paternity test but getting one was the right call. My Dad wants to stop by soon but my Mom won't let him so I sent a couple photos and left it at that. Sophie has been focused on doing whatever is best for Milo so I'm just following her lead."
"Are her parents involved?" He asked, sipping his coffee as he leaned against the counter.
I nodded with a grin, "Jake and Ruth were over a couple times this past week with dinner. They brought enchiladas on Monday night which were so good we polished off the whole pan along with chips and salsa. On Wednesday Ruth was around for most of the day after grabbing some groceries we needed. She cuddled Milo for a good hour so we could get a solid nap which was appreciated. Oh, then on Saturday we did family dinner at the Green's house including Soph's sister and her family. It was a great time celebrating Milo, especially since her folks bought a birthday cake."
Caleb grinned, "I love the one week birthday cake idea. That must have been so fun! How is Addy with the baby?"
"She's still a bit anxious at the idea of holding him unless she's settled on the couch. I can't blame her but she's been stepping up to handle dishes and some of the cooking. She made blueberry muffins this morning that were great. If it's a box mix then she nails it but anything else makes Addy nervous."
Caleb chuckled, "Yeah, your sister is a bit sheltered, hasn't she?"
"First thing Soph taught her was how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. Addy caught on fast and really likes being more independent. My apartment has plenty of space for her so for now we have everything we need and are getting adjusted."
The Principal joined us and lit up when she saw me. "Will Farnsworth! I need more baby pictures, please. Pay the toll."
I laughed and showed her a few shots from his first bath as well as at his first Doctor appointment this past Wednesday. She cooed over his chubby cheeks and thighs while I let myself soak up the encouragement. The lack of sleep was making my brain fuzzy but I fought to stay caffeinated, knowing I would be home soon to the life I was building with Sophie.
My first day back at school went more smoothly than I expected. I let my students know I was now a Dad and showed a couple photos, including one of Sophie and me in the hospital minutes after Milo was born.
