EIGHT YEARS AGO - February 2007

Once Upon a Time . . . in a faraway land called Danbury, Connecticut, my life would be forever changed, but not in the way a ten-year-old dreamed of.

Real life doesn't equal fairy tales.

Or happily ever afters.

Real life equals something far worse . . .

"You come from a long line of extraordinary witches, so embrace the beauty of magic inside you, Andrea. Don't let others shame you; having this wonderful ability makes you who you truly are, my darling daughter."

These were the last words my mother told me before we were ripped apart from one another and she was taken into the hospital's care. People feared her for being different and having powers nobody could clearly or logically comprehend. The doctors acted as though she was this ungodly creature that needed to be poked and prodded at.

Being only ten-years-old, when I watched the doctors haul her away, an intense fear gnawed at my insides. My mother's older brother, Uncle David, decided to let me stay with him and his wife, along with their two daughters, Ruby and Emily, instead of making me rot inside the system like all the other unfortunate children in this cruel world.

"Remember to keep your powers hidden, Andrea, and don't use them unless you have to," Uncle David said, his warm brown eyes sparkled with a twinge of hope as he planted a kiss on my forehead.

Grabbing my dainty little hand, he led me into the luxurious mansion that would become my permanent home until high school graduation.

The ice-cold glare from my aunt's piercing blue eyes burned into me when she realized there would be an extra mouth to feed. The constant snickers and side-eye glances I received from my cousins didn't help my self-esteem much. Still listening to my mother's words, I promised myself to always embrace the powers that flowed endlessly throughout my body, mind, and soul.

"Don't be afraid, Andrea. Your powers are an extraordinary gift that shouldn't be locked away. Don't let these puny haters get under your skin."

Her words echoed inside my head as I followed Uncle David, Aunt Celia, Ruby, and Emily through the beige-white front wooden doors with my Disney Princess suitcase in hand and began my new life.
