Luhan's Arc - Part Seven

A few days later, I was parked outside Yixing's apartment complex, waiting for him to come downstairs. Most of the time, he didn't make me wait very long. But on that day, he seemed to have slept in a little, judging by his sleepy yet harried voice on the phone when I called him a few minutes earlier. He was probably tripping over his feet, trying to get his outfit ready as we speak.

My phone began to buzz, and I felt my heart jolt a little when I saw the familiar caller's name. Sehun. My finger lingered over the answer button hesitantly. On any other day, I would have answered it in a heartbeat.

But at that same moment, I saw Yixing walk out of the building with his usual boyish smile, his hair shaggier than usual, his outfit even more colourful and mismatched than usual, and his face admittedly... Cuter than usual.

Decisively, I declined the call, typing in a quick text just as Yixing opened the door and settled next to me.

'Sorry, I'm driving to school. Talk later.'

I looked up to meet Yixing's glowing eyes as he greeted. "Hi."

"Hi yourself."

I pursed my lips, but eventually couldn't help cracking a silly smile as he continued to grin at me, reaching for my hand and intertwining our fingers.

"Who's that?" He asked, glancing down at my phone.

I chuckled, "That... Is a story for another time."

He looked at me curiously for a long moment before leaning in to peck me on the lips sweetly, making my heart skip a beat as he let it linger.

"Better not be someone trying to steal you from me," he muttered possessively. "You're mine."

I chuckled a little, pulling back. "You haven't even asked me out yet."

"I thought we'd skipped all the formalities already."

I began to pull out of his driveway as I replied. "You can't claim ownership of me without said formalities."

"Oh I already have," he said cheekily, lightly squeezing my hand before I felt warm metal around my ring finger. I looked down at my hand, blinking. "But I'll play by your rules anyway, just because you're cute."

I tugged my hand free, looking at the silver band around my finger in wonder, a single colourful heart in the center, the lights within the gem shifting along with the light. "Yixing, this is..."

He smiled almost shyly, showing me his own hand with his own, similar ring, except his heart was a shiny black. "It'll be the only colourful part of your outfit... And this'll be the only black part of mine. I'll be the light that colours your life and fills it with excitement and adventure... And you'll be the black that brings me back to earth, keeps me grounded and gives me comfort. I just came up with that metaphor last night."

"That... Is very cheesy," I muttered, although the red colouring my cheeks told a very different story. He grinned, nervous and giddy all the same.

"Be my boyfriend? I can promise you life would suck a lot less with me."

Stopping at a traffic light, I turned to see him staring at me expectantly. I pursed my lips.

"I suppose... There are worse fates than being stuck with you."

Later that morning, we walked down the school halls, our hands brushing against each other intentionally, our matching rings glinting against the passing lights, our matching smiles sweet, shy and flirtatious all the same. We held hands underneath the lunch table and shared stolen kisses in the bathroom. He came home with me, and we had dinner together with my family. They were happy to have him over, he was happy to feel like he had a family again, and I was just... Happy.
