❀ LUCY

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWO AND A HALF MONTHS LUCY HAD A FULL NIGHT'S SLEEP. The fear of a walker sneaking into camp and killing everyone hurt her sleep schedule more than she realized. A real bed - without Carl's sleeping form kicking her - did wonders for the back pain she'd somehow acquired over their time at the Quarry.

So when the clock struck seven, the sun was no doubt rising in the sky. Lucy got up and started her day. Careful not to wake her parents, Lucy tippy-toed over to Carl's bed, where the twelve-year-old snored loudly. An idea formed in her head, causing her to jump onto Carl's bed.

She tickled the sleeping form, formerly known as her brother until he was giggling. "Get off," he said, attempting to push her off of the bed, but Lucy was stronger than him.

"Nope. Time to get up," she sang in a sing-song voice, pulling the sheets off of him.

He groaned, grabbing the sheets and pulling them back over his head. "No, go away."

Lucy sighed, tickling behind his ear. "Come on, I'm hungry. Aren't you always dying to hang out with me anyway?"

No response, but a body flipped under the blanket cocoon. He was being stubborn, but Lucy wanted him to go with her. The place was big, and having a friend by herself through all this was better than being alone with her thoughts; a dangerous game it was becoming. Thinking her thoughts, that is.

"C-A-R-L," she drew out the syllables of his name, shaking his shoulders under the blanket.

Still nothing. Fine, a new tactic then . . .

She folded her hands over each other, turning her head to the door. "Okay, I'll let you sleep. T-Dog's probably up making breakfast, and with all the food he has to work with here - he's definitely making something good. I'll get my pick of whatever eggs and bacon he finds-"

Carl sat up in the bed, hair sticking up in all directions. He squinted at Lucy, who smiled back at him innocently. "Let's go." He yawned, putting his shoes back on.

Her mom was right when she said a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Carl always responded to bribes for food. No matter what time of day it was. "What about mom and dad?" Carl asked, shivering from the cold before deciding to put on his robe.
