chapter twenty: better angels.
MIKAYLA HADN'T SLEPT THE LAST FEW DAYS AND IT HAD SHOWED BY THE dark bags under her eyes. Her brown eyes that were once full of life were now dull, Daryl had slowly walked up to her. His harsh glaze softened at the sight in front of him, he wrapped his arms around her, bringing her into his embrace. Mikayla didn't move, she didn't flinch until it was clear the redneck wasn't letting go.Glenn had personally asked him to try and get through to her. Others had tried but the younger Rhee wouldn't seem to budge. The older Rhee was worried, he had never seen her like this before, Dale's death hit her the hardest.
Darly's hand cradled the back of her head, "I know you don't want to talk," he whispered "just listen. You've got Glenn worried, so is Four and Alex. It's not your fault, you did the best you could."
The two of them stood there for a couple more minutes until Mikayla's hands gripped the redneck's shoulders. Her eyes fluttered shut as she buried her head into his chest, slowly nodding.
"Oh, baby Rhee," Daryl spoke, "what have you done to me?"
Mikayla softly chuckled, she was the first one to pull away. Sending the redneck a soft smile as she wiped away a few tears, "you ready?" He questioned, holding his hand out.
Mikayla nodded, taking his hand. The redneck guided her over towards where the group stood, the cold morning air blew against her skin, making her over towards the older Rhee, who automatically wrapped his hands around her shoulders.
"Dale could get under your skin," Rick began, "he sure got under mine, because he wasn't afraid to say exactly what he thought, how he felt. That kind of honesty is rare and brave. Whenever I'd make a decision, I'd look at Dale," he informed them, "he'd be looking back at me with that look he had. We've all seen it one time or another."
Glenn held the younger Rhee in his arms tighter, pressing his lips on the top of her head. Her eyes fluttered shut, tears travelled down her cheeks.
"I couldn't always read him, but he could read us," Rick conutined, "he saw people for who they were. He knew things about us — the truth, who we really are. In the end, he was talking about losing our humanity. He said this group was broken. The best way to honor him is to unbreak it," he stated, "set aside our differences and pull together, stop feeling sorry for ourselves and take control of our lives, or safety, our future. We're not broken. We're gonna prove him wrong. From now on we're gonna do it his way. That is how we honor Dale."
