Chapter 47

I curled back into Sweet Pea's side, holding the phone to my ear.

"Do you want the bad news or the bad news?" Hunter asked.

I groaned, Sweet Pea looked away from the tv, concerned. "Love those choices," I said sarcastically. "Can't you call me with good news once in a while?"

"Well, I'm calling to give you a head's up about who the new sheriff of Riverdale is going to be, so isn't that good?"

I rolled my eyes. "Wait, what new sheriff?"

"Sheriff Keller resigned?" Sweet Pea asked beside me.

"Is that your boy-toy?" Hunter asked before turning serious again. "How much does he know about what's going on?"

"What's going on with the Sheriff?" I asked, ignoring his questions. "Why's Keller being replaced?"

Hunter sighed through the phone. "I don't know if your current guy is resigning or being kicked out, but there's a replacement coming in a few days."

"Hunter, just tell me who it's gonna be," I snapped.

"It, uh, it's gonna be Michael Minetta," Hunter stuttered out.

I froze. "As in, current sheriff of Centerville, Michael Minetta? Former captain of Greendale?"

"Yeah," he sighed. "The same one."

"Abigail, what's going on?" Sweet Pea asked as I swore under my breath.

"We have a new Sheriff coming to town. And I have a feeling Keller's being forced out by the Lodges," I told him.

Sweet Pea grabbed his phone making calls to find out what he could.

"Uh, Abi, there's more news," Hunter said hesitantly. "But maybe you already know about this."

"What else?"

"Chic's sister, Blondie, was at the hostel the other day with her boyfriend. Rented a room from Tiffany. They didn't stay long though."

What the hell were Jughead and Betty up to now? I hadn't talked to her much the past few days, but I did know that Alice had kicked Chic out of the house after we scared off Darla and Marcel. "Do you know what they were up to?"

"Sorry, Abi, that's all we got," Hunter replied.

"No, that's fine," I said.

Before I could hang up, Hunter's voice came through the phone one more time. "Tonight's the night?" he asked quietly.

"Yeah, it is. I'll keep you posted."

I waited while Sweet Pea finished his call, wondering about Hiram Lodge's master plan for Riverdale.

He tossed his phone on the table in front of us, sighing. "It's official, Sheriff Keller handed in his resignation this morning. What makes you think the Lodges are behind it?"

"It makes sense, considering Hiram Lodge seems to be making Riverdale his own personal kingdom," I said. "He already owns Pop's, Sunnyside, The Register, and who knows what else. He has Weatherbee under his thumb with that new wing they're building at Riverdale High. He's building a prison. And his wife is running for mayor. Why wouldn't he want to bring in a crooked Sheriff?"

"We finally got Sheriff Keller off the Serpents backs and now there's a new guy coming to crack down on us," Sweet Pea said. "I doubt Lodge is gonna tell him to go easy on us."

"With the Black Hood threatening the town again, Minetta's gonna try and pin anything and everything on us. We need to be careful, he's not gonna let things slide like Keller did."
