Megumi nodded, his gaze reflecting a mixture of guilt and determination. "I promise, Brina, I'll do whatever it takes to protect you and our children. No more secrets, no more lies."
Brina sighed, the weight of the conversation still heavy in the air. "We have a lot to figure out, Megumi. Our relationship, our future, everything." She reached for his hand, a small gesture of connection amidst the turmoil.
"So, does your dad know?" Megumi mumbled, massaging her hands. "Yes, in fact, he was part of it back in the day when I was younger."
"Wow, it feels like I'm in a crime novel or a movie," Brina remarked, a mixture of amusement and disbelief in her voice.
Megumi chuckled, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, life got a bit too cinematic. But, Brina, I mean it when I say I want a different life for us and our kids. I want to leave this mess behind."
"Then why move us here, to Japan?" Megumi sighed, his eyes reflecting a complicated mix of regret and determination. "I thought it would be a good move for our children, for Mizu and Ezar. The food is better than what they had in New York, plus free health care. I wanted them to have a chance at a better life than just seeing fog, trash, and big-ass rats on the block every day. I wanted them to soak in a different culture, get the chance to learn and grow in a place that felt more like home."
Brina nodded, understanding the complexity of Megumi's decisions. "Japan is nice, Megumi. Mizu is learning more at school, and I think Ezar likes the baby food up here." Megumi sighed, grateful for Brina's understanding. "I just wanted them to have a different childhood than I did. I wanted to break the cycle, give them a chance at something more." He continued massaging Brina's hands, a silent acknowledgment of the challenges they were facing.
