Chapter 2
"Katniss, you really should go back." Katniss's mother said, sitting beside Katniss on her bed.
Katniss barely acknowledged her as she felt on the music book for the blind. She had learnt how to recognize notes during her stay at the clinic in the Capitol.
"Peeta's back too, you know?" Louise added, wringing her hands.
Katniss looked up at this.
"I know," Katniss murmured. "Mom, he's been back since the week before someone blinded me."
"Katniss," Louise took Katniss's hands and sighed. "I'm sorry someone did this to you."
Katniss just kept quiet, letting her mother hold her hands. There was a few minutes of silence as the mother and daughter held hands before Louise released her daughter and stood up. She wiped her tears and spoke.
"Well, it's up to you if you want to go back to school," Louise finally said. "Your father said it would be good if you reunite with your friends."
Katniss did miss her friends. But if she went to school, she knew she would be ridiculed for being blind, even though she didn't choose this at all. She heard her mother open the door softly.
"Mom?" She croaked.
"Yeah, honey?" Louise's voice came from behind the door.
"I'll go back to school."

"You ready?" Katniss's father asked. "Kat, you don't have to do this if you don't want to."
"I know that," Katniss said, stepping out the car carefully. "I'll be okay."
She unfolded her cane and smiled in her parents' direction.
"I have friends, you know" was all Katniss said before turning around and tapping her cane on the ground to guide her.
She heard her dad's car tearing away. She smirked slightly as she remembered her mom complaining about how fast her dad drove.
"Katniss?"
Katniss halted at the voice. She knew that voice, it was very familiar to her. Katniss raised an eyebrow.
"Kylie?" She called, facing the direction where the voice came from.
"You're back!"
Katniss heard Kylie's heels click on the pavement as she came closer. Then she felt arms wrap around her neck. Katniss hugged Kylie back.
Kylie Marshall was one of Katniss's best friends, they had been best friends since middle school when Kylie was new to District 12.
"I missed you so much," Kylie whispered as she pulled back. "Everyone will be so happy to see you."
Katniss laughed.
"You sure? I feel like everyone will just poke fun at me." Katniss folded her cane and hooked her arm around Kylie's.
"For what?" Kylie replied. "Everybody has been saying that they couldn't wait to meet Katniss Everdeen again."
"So that they can see the blind version." Katniss added.
"Stop it." Kylie scolded playfully.
Katniss giggled again. They entered the school together, Kylie chattering away at the changes that occurred while Katniss was being treated for her burns and non-working eyes.
"Oh God, Katniss Everdeen is back."
It was an all-too-familiar voice and Katniss hated that voice.
It was Johanna Mason.
Johanna Mason was Peeta's new missus. The one Peeta had probably left Katniss for.
Katniss stopped abruptly, wanting to give Johanna Mason a piece of her mind, before Kylie tugged at her arm and dragged her away.
"Why did you stop me? I would've ripped that bitch limb to limb!" Katniss ranted angrily.
"Peeta was right there," Kylie mumbled. "He was trying to pull Johanna away."
The look of anger on Katniss's face melted away as it was replaced by hurt.
"Whatever," Katniss murmured. "Where's Madge and Annie?"
"Right here!"
Katniss heard Madge's loud voice and she grinned happily again. She was finally together with her friends and not even Peeta Mellark or Johanna Mason could ruin this.
