Chapter 5
Peeta braced himself as he pulled up in front of the Everdeen house. He was going in there to officially apologize to Katniss, and hopefully patch things up. Her comment at the shoe store earlier made Peeta rethink what he did during the time she was away, trying to heal.
He broke up with her in a manner that definitely made her feel she could never trust Peeta again. He had called her up and told her it was over, for God's sake. What the actual fuck was he thinking? Katniss deserved way better treatment than how he treated her when they were together. He knew he deserved all the snarky comments she threw at him.
He finally turned off the engine, grabbed his phone and got out of his car. He locked it up before slowly making his way towards the house. He paused when he reached the porch.
Oh, he was a certified pussy. There was no way he'd be able to go up there, let alone look at Katniss in the face.
Peeta whirled back around and decided to hurriedly rush back to his car and drive home. He couldn't do it, he couldn't, he just couldn't-
"Peeta?"
Peeta froze. Fuck. He had been discovered. He grit his teeth and turned around slowly.
"Hey, Mr Everdeen." He said in a fake cheery voice.
"Peeta! Were you here to see Katniss?" Mr Everdeen asked, smiling warmly at him.
"Yeah, actually," Peeta scratched nervously at the nape of his neck. "Is she in?"
"Yes, she is," Mr Everdeen answered. "She's in her room. Come on in."
Peeta had no choice but to trudge up the porch and into the house. He followed Katniss's father upstairs, and nodded when Mr Everdeen told him to just make himself at home.
Mr Everdeen then climbed back downstairs, leaving Peeta standing alone in front of Katniss's closed door. He curled his hand into a fist, carefully raised it and knocked on the wood.
"Come in!" Katniss called.
Peeta took in a deep breath and turned the doorknob. He entered slowly, and saw Katniss laying on her bed, her back propped up by a pillow. She looked effortlessly beautiful, even though she was clad in pajamas. Her face was makeup-free, but big shades blocked her eyes from view. Peeta wondered how badly scarred her gorgeous grey eyes were.
"What is it, Dad?" Katniss laughed. "Your heavy footsteps immediately gave you away."
"Hey, Katniss." Peeta said softly.
The smile slowly melted from Katniss's face as she registered who was really in her room.
"Peeta," Katniss removed her earphones from her ears and her fingers fumbled for the pause button. "What are you doing here?"
She threw her legs off the bed and stood up. Now they were facing each other, but he guessed Katniss didn't really know where she was facing.
"I was thinking about what you said earlier when we met," Peeta began. "It made me feel incredibly guilty."
"Guilt was long overdue," Katniss smiled wryly. "Anything else you wanna say?"
"I know you said my apologies mean nothing, but I really, truly am sorry," Peeta said desperately. "I loved you so much, and I guess I was just afraid of loving someone like that. So I broke it off."
"Over the phone too." Katniss added.
"I knew I should've Facetimed you or something, but I couldn't bear to see the look on your face," Peeta explained. "Texting you seemed even worse, so I settled for calling. I have never made a worse mistake in my entire life, and I am so sorry for that mistake I made."
Katniss stayed silent. Peeta had no idea whether to just leave or stand there and wait for her to speak, so he just carried on.
"I'm not coming here to beg you to take me back. I know you won't anyway," Peeta continued. "I just wanted to apologize. And I also wanted to say I have never felt happier in a relationship when I was with you. Other girls don't compare to you."
Katniss pursed her lips and folded her arms, her hip jutting out to one side.
"I appreciate that you came here to apologize," she finally spoke. "But there is nothing you can say to make me change my mind about your apologies."
Peeta's heart sank. There goes his last chance to gain her trust back. There goes his last shot at being her friend.
"You should go," Katniss sat back down on her bed. "Goodbye, Peeta."
