Chapter 1
Today was the day.
Today was the day that she could finally be free, the day that she could finally go back to the puzzle that was her real life. Hopefully she would still have people who would help her, people who would still have her back. She prayed no one would shun her for being blind. She knew how judgemental people in District 12 could be.
The most beautiful girl became the handicapped girl in a matter of seconds.
And she hated it, she hated the fact that things could change at the drop of a hat.
"Miss Everdeen?"
Katniss looked up when she heard her name being called. She waited patiently for the nurse to tell her that her parents were here and they wanted to pick her up and bring her back to District 12, her real home.
The Capitol's burn clinic was in no way Katniss's home. She was sick of this place, more than she could ever describe.
"Here, you have a call." The nurse handed Katniss the phone.
She grappled the air for a moment before finally fitting the phone in her hand and putting it to her ear.
"Hello?"
A husky breath reached Katniss's eardrums. She frowned slightly. Why would someone call only to breathe heavily into the phone?
"You, Katniss Everdeen," the rasping voice took another heavy breath, "are no victim."
Katniss opened her mouth to respond to this person but the line went dead and she was left shocked.
"Has the person hung up?" The same nurse came back.
Katniss couldn't really detect the voice of the nurse. Maybe she was new, or she had never been in the wing before.
Katniss nodded and outstretched her arm, handing the phone back to the nurse.
"Your parents are here to collect you, Miss Everdeen," the nurse continued after punching a few buttons on the phone. "I assume you've said your goodbyes."
"I have," Katniss said, rising. "Thank you for taking care of me."
"That's our job, sweetie," Katniss felt the soft stroke of the nurse's hand on her silky brown hair. "Now, go live your life."
Katniss gripped her cane and let the nurse guide her out of the ward. She was finally free, and there was no one who could hold her back.
Katniss finally smiled for the first time in very long when she felt the cool breeze whipping her hair about.
There was nothing to fear anymore.
Or so she thought.
