Chapter 4
"So what do you think of these?" Johanna propped her feet up on the red leather cushion of the shoe store they had been at for half an hour.
Johanna has tried on 10 pairs of shoes, claiming the one before wasn't the one for her. Peeta had absolutely no idea why she needed a new pair, considering the fact her stepdad had just bought her a new pair of black studded ankle boots that basically everybody envied. Sometimes Peeta thought that Johanna was super spoiled, even after having a rough childhood without a proper father.
"Johanna, are you done?" Peeta rubbed his eyes groggily. "If you are, just buy one of these and let's get out of here."
"Rule number 1, never rush a girl while she's looking for her match." Johanna wandered off.
Rule number 1? More like rule number 10000. Peeta groaned and leaned backwards, rolling his eyes.
Remind me again why I took Johanna?, he thought tiredly.
His blue eyes shot open at a familiar laugh. It tinkled throughout the shop, sounding so sweet and innocent. Johanna immediately dropped a shoe she was holding, shocked by the sound. Peeta looked up reluctantly, only to see Katniss Everdeen walking in, tapping her cane again. This time, instead of being guided by Madge Undersee, as always, Katniss was being escorted by another unfamiliar girl. Peeta had never seen her around before and judging by the look on Johanna's face, neither had she. The girl had pretty green eyes and her lips were plump and lined with red lipstick, going great with her all-black outfit. She stared at Peeta and Johanna, a knowing smirk etched on her lips.
If Peeta was honest, she could be a Katniss clone, just not as gorgeous. She walked Katniss over to where Peeta was.
"Katniss, I think we might've bumped into your friends." She said in a sickly sweet voice which made Peeta immediately dislike her.
Katniss looked momentarily confused, before she smiled.
"Hi, Peeta," she said. "And I presume you're with Johanna?"
"How did you know?" Johanna piped up, settling down beside Peeta while barefoot.
"I recognize the smell," Katniss cocked her head to the side. "Cinammon and dill. Isn't that right, Peeta?"
"Uh, yeah," he agreed reluctantly. "What brings you girls here?"
"Courtney has a fashion crisis," Katniss explained. "None of her shoes go with her new Marc Jacobs dress."
"Yep, and it's an important fashion show," Courtney rolled her eyes. "Just my luck, huh?"
Courtney led Katniss to the seat beside Peeta and sat her down before looking at all the black heels. Johanna gave Katniss the evil eye before examining a pair of knee-high black boots.
"So who's your friend?" Peeta cleared his throat awkwardly.
"That's my cousin, Courtney Everdeen," Katniss said. "Our aunt Diamantè scored her a ticket for the latest fashion show here in Panem."
"Don't you wanna go?" Peeta questioned, watching as Katniss folded her cane.
"What's the point?" Katniss turned and looked at Peeta with her big sunglasses. "I'm blind."
He was silenced, and Katniss smiled wryly.
"Just to be blatant," Katniss shrugged. "Not asking for pity or anything."
"I'm really sorry this happened to you-" Peeta began.
"Save it," Katniss's tone was clipped. "Your apologies to me don't really mean anything, Peeta."
"Katniss-"
"Seriously," Katniss stood up and unfolded her cane. "Save your breath."
Peeta stared at Katniss, a feeling of guilt washing over him. Her message was that he never really meant his apology over the phone when they broke up. He realized how much of a douchebag he was, dumping her officially over the phone.
"Court? Can we go?" Katniss asked, breaking him out of his reverie.
"Oh! Yeah." Courtney looked questioningly at Peeta before putting down a boot and helping Katniss out of the store.
"What is her problem?" Johanna scoffed. "Freak."
