Chapter 13

The next morning Spencer invited everyone to hang out at Larry's grill. I could never pass up a chance to eat there, they had the best barbeque chicken in the universe, so I readily accepted the invitation, but I didn't think he was going to be there.

I glared at Danny from across the room as he innocently smiled at me. Spencer, Cody, and Katy sat around the table with sheepish grins.

I was set up

Considering how I said I wasn't going to avoid him anymore I stomped over to the only empty seat beside him, but not without making my irritation known. I slid my eyes to Katy as she gives me the same cheeky grin "you traitor"

She wiggles her eyebrows before directing her attention to the menu. "What would you like? it'll be my treat" A shadow falls over me as I receive my menu.

I could practically feel his breath on my cheek "uh-uh", I pushed his head away from me "too close buddy" This makes me remember a very detailed lip-locking moment that I forgot to get angry about because I was too shocked when it happened.

"You don't want me to pay for you?" He removes my hand from his forehead. I shake my head "no I didn't say that, yes treat me so I can eat all the food I want" His small smile told me he enjoyed our bickering.

"Alright" I skimmed the menu, ordering a variety of things.

"Oooh let me try" I ordered a chocolate dribble cake that everyone wants to stick their fingers in. "mm-mm" this is good.

"I think this is their specialty in desserts" Katy takes another bite

"Speaking of desserts" Spenser drums his fingers on the counter "Cody your birthday is coming up, what are you going to do?" oh yeah Cody was the oldest out of us all, his birthday was three weeks from now.

"Yeah, what are you going to do? I hope it's something fun" we all lean in waiting for his answer.

Cody's shoulders tense up "I don't know"

"Ugh," Katy swipes the rest of his drink "the same as last year, how about instead we plan something for you"

That's a great idea "and we'll get spencer a girlfriend while we're at it" Spencer holds his heart like he was wounded "are you guys trying to get rid of me? "

"Yes," we say in unison

We look at each other then burst out laughing, but I didn't miss the long stare Katy directed at Cody

Oh, what is this? I rest my chin on my interlaced hands as I cast a knowing smile at her. Does Katy have a crush that I don't know about?

She meets my gaze as I point between them both without anyone else noticing. Katy's eyes go wide as she shoots out of her chair "Mia bathroom now!" I cover my lips to hide my smile "coming"

She leans over the sink with her head cast down "I was obvious, wasn't I?"

I Didn't want to lie to her because she definitely was "Well yeah" I stated, staring at her contemplating herself "why didn't you tell me you like him?"

Her eyes flicked to mine "because I wasn't sure if I did, well not until now. I've been caught and there's no better confirmation than when someone else notices it"

I grin but cover it up before she catches on to what it entails. Now I'm getting excited, maybe it's my time to play matchmaker mother.

"How long have you felt this way?" She cocks her head "about a few weeks, maybe"

"Does he like you?" she throws her arms up in frustration "that's the thing, I don't know" I watch as she starts to pace back and forth meanwhile I inch closer to the door."Ya know, maybe I should just go ask him, it would be way easier than you falling apart in here"

I take only two steps out the door before I'm shoved back inside "Don't you dare" She glares at me like I'll run away any minute if she so far as blink. Well, maybe I will.

"Why don't you want me to ask him? Maybe he likes you back" She shakes her head so hard I get whipped in the face by her hair "hey, watch it" She turns around holding her arms "He won't like me"

After getting her hair out of my eyes I grab her by the shoulders turning her around. The look on her face showed me she was sad and nervous, but why?

"How could you say that Katy, you haven't asked him" Her face turns away from me "What's wrong?" She doesn't say anything "Katy is there something else you didn't tell me?"

She slowly looks at me with a defeated expression. "f..four months ago Cody told me he l..liked me but I didn't like him at the time, I was interested in someone else but our relationship didn't work out"

Is she talking about that guy she met at her dad's shop? I've only heard about him once when I was away. What was his name again, Josh right?

"He said he had feelings for me, but I was so angry at that jerk I took it out on him" She looks down holding back tears "I said horrible things to him"

"What did you say?"
