The night before the trip, Pat spent the night at my place since it was closer to my parents’ place. We got there before six. Luckily my mom was already awake.

“You are here early,” my mom said.

“We were to come for him yesterday but he wouldn’t have finished his homework on time. There are others waiting for us and we don’t want to keep them waiting,”

“He just finished his breakfast so you’ll have to get him ready,” she said. Her eyes kept stealing glances at Pat.

“Oh , this is Pat, a very good friend of mine from way back, you also met her at Chance’s birthday. Pat, this is my mom and you’ve already met my son,”

“Nice to meet you again Mama Elizabeth,” Pat said shaking her hand. I could see all the questions my mom had but kept them to herself.

“Have you had anything to eat?” mom asked, “There’s tea and bread and you can make some eggs too,”

“No, I’m good, ba- I remembered in whose presence we were in and fake laughed, “I was about to call you bat,” Pat caught up and laughed too.

“It’s a little too early for that,”

“Would you like something to eat as I get Chance ready?”

“I wouldn’t mind some,” I made her a couple of eggs and served them to her with tea and a few slices of bread.

“I’ll be back,” I told her and left to get him ready for the trip.

“If you only served me that diligently when we are alone,” Pat texted me.

“Don’t be asking for marriage treatment for a dating subscription,” I replied.

When I was through with Chance I asked him to join the others before I finished packing a few of his clothes. I found the three of them laughing as if they’d known each other forever.

“Are you ready?” Pat asked when she saw me with a bag.

“Yeah, we can leave now,”

“Are you leaving already?”

“Yes, we don’t want to keep the others waiting any longer,”

“Please return my grandson as healthy as he is now,”

“We’ll try,”

“And next time you have to stay longer. It’s not good to visit for just a few minutes and leave,”

“Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of me,” I almost pinched her to remind her to watch her words.

On our way to the meeting point, Pat and Chance got better acquainted with each other. We found Pat's friends waiting outside a luxurious looking van. They were talking and laughing but went quiet when they saw us.

There were six adults and three kids in total going on that trip. A hetero-couple that consisted of Collins and Eve, the parents and Sonia and Ace their kids. Another lesbian couple of Max and Kate.

Pat, Max and Collins had been best friends since childhood. I was the newest member in that crew. Collins and Eve had been together seven years but were married for five. Max and Kate had been together almost five years.

It was going to be a long trip so we left almost immediately.

Pat, Chance and I sat at the back, Eve, Kate and the two kids sat at the middle while Max drove and Collins was her co-driver.

We made our first stop and we changed seats. Collins was now driving and Pat, Chance and I sat at the middle seats. I wasn’t worried about keeping Chance entertained because Pat got that part covered so I caught up on work.
