I walked down to Sarah and saw her creating a new block of ice. She was still completely exhausted from the interrogation and I told her she could do it in peace tomorrow. But it only fell on deaf ears. When I got to the bedroom, I saw that the entrance to the labyrinth was filled with dirt. I made contact with the crystal, which was also still foaming with rage, and it absorbed the earth again. Behind me, an nervous Hilda jumped at me.
"Young Master, how can you just lock up an old woman. I mean, weeds don't wither, but I need air too!"
I told her what had happened and she suggested that we send another small bribe. She had just found a poison mixture that was particularly painful. Apparently everyone here has no sense of consequences. When she realized, that I had no intention of going along with her plans, she went to Sarah and I could hear them making plans together.
I entered the maze and could see the m right near the entrance. The carrier skeleton stood next to it and handed me the crystal. As I touched it, lightning shot through my body and I fell to the ground.
Argh, no one understands me here.
When I came back upstairs later, I saw Bruno and Sven having bitter fights. Apparently they both used it as an outlet to vent their frustration. Every now and then I heard one of them quoting the leader's sentences, which often resulted in a soon defeat. Karl joined me and I petted him, while I continued to watch the two of them. Maybe at least someone understands me.
In the evening Sarah and Hilda came up and we ate together. Everyone reported on their interrogation and we tried to fine-tune our lies a little better. But I was sure that the leader himself would see through this; the devil, as he said, was in the details. We also thought about, how we could prevent this from happening in the future, but we couldn't think of a good solution. The only thing we could do, was not make ourselves more suspicious. So we should avoid further summoning, if possible. Hopefully that shouldn't be that difficult, since I only summoned Sven out of necessity.
I later tried to see if I could lock rooms, because the crystal had only filled the entrance to the labyrinth with dirt and found that this was not possible. All rooms had to be connected. Apparently you couldn't create an independent area. So the only option was to simply fill in the entrance. However, this had the disadvantage that the creatures in the labyrinth no longer had any air flow. Maybe I should think about air holes, but there is the water problem, that I would have to solve. Except the holes aren't in the ceiling, but in the wall. I created small air tunnels into the upper areas in places where I didn't want them to be noticeable. If we block the entrance again, air should still be able to come down through it. Not perfect, but better than nothing.
The summer heat was now too much for Sarah and she could only be found in the lower area. The summer sleep would probably take place soon.
A few days later Aron came with his group. When he saw me, he became very nervous and asked me how the examination had been. We reported what had happened and Aron hit the table every now and then.
"What a crap, the guild specifically emphasized, that we need you and that we wouldn't just accept accusations. But of course, it doesn't matter to those up there, they just do what they want."
"How did you know about this?"
"Because of the contract with you, the guild had to report it to the city and when I reported that you had another companion, they suspected espionage and sent out an investigation team. He first questioned us and then came to you. All we heard later was that it couldn't be confirmed. As soon as I found out they were back, I immediately went to see for myself, what it was like. I'm sorry you had to go through that because of us."
"At least you tried to have an influence."
"Unfortunately without success. For them, adventurers are just good-for-nothings."
"Is your position so low?"
"We are always told that we can't do anything. If we were real fighters, we would be soldiers. So in their eyes we are just bullies, who haven't found any other work. I don't have to tell you, that that's not true. There are a few out there, who really appreciate our work, because they know what we accomplish, but the townspeople and nobility in particular are blind to it."
His fist crashed onto the table again and his colleagues just nodded in agreement.
"If you don't like the townsfolk, why are you in Wachstadt?"
"Do we have a choice? We also have to put food on the table and the villages don't have that many orders. So we have to go to bigger cities to have enough orders. Where is Sarah anyway?"
"Ah, she hasn't recovered from the shock yet and doesn't want any contact with guests for the time being. Maybe woke up an old trauma too, not sure."
"Oh the poor thing. They didn't even stop at her, even though she always acted so upscale. I'm sure they classified her as a monster because of her appearance."
"Probably."
"I'm not surprised about Bruno. As a Demi, he is basically a monster for them, only a few adventurers appreciate the power of a Demi."
"So Demis don't have it easy in the city?"
"What do you think? They are not seen as people. Even the villagers don't want to have anything to do with them and would drive them away. In the city they can at least live in the slums, but if something happens, it's always their fault. As I said, as a veteran I know, that a Demi like him can be worth a lot, but most people see it differently."
We let out some more frustration and the adventurers asked us if there was anything they could do, but I couldn't think of anything. So they helped us a little with our general tasks, such as hunting or cutting wood, and left the next day.
