An unusual group arrived at our place around midday.
A woman with cat ears, tail and eyes and equipped with daggers entered the cave.
"Brr, it's cold here."
"That is because you were laying on the wagon and sunbathing. If you had walked like we did, you would find it pleasant."
Said a man with pointy dog ears, he also had a tail and his nose was similar to a dog's. He seemed to prefer swords.
"Now don't start arguing again, or do you want to leave a bad first impression on our new client?"
A man with strangely shaped arms and a long, thin tail followed the two and warned them. A morning star was attached to his side.
"As if that would do anything."
A fourth man, who had no facial hair and eyes as sharp as an eagle, made this comment hopelessly. He had a bow on his back and a quiver of arrows on his hip.
"Don't be so negative, Viktor. Ah, there he is. Greetings Marco. We are here on behalf of the guild. You have certainly been waiting eagerly for the contract. This is now over. If you would be so good as to sign here, then we can begin your new chapter."
He handed me the contract with a smile on his face.
"I'm so free, sir."
Sven took the contract from our visitor and read the contents out loud. Although I had already made good progress in reading, it was still too early to do such an important thing on my own. The wording was appropriate and corresponded to our agreements. So my fears were unfounded, everything seemed fine. I signed the contract and returned it.
"Very nice. The guild will be happy about that. I think we should introduce ourselves briefly. My name is Albert, a monkey demi and the leader of this humble group. Viktor there is an eagle demi and is our scout. Mia here is obviously a cat demi and is a big help especially at night. Last but not least there is Winfried, a dog demi. If you ever miss someone, you can rely on his nose. The guild has selected us as your first stationary squad. I hope you will take us in despite our origins."
I introduced the attendants present.
"I'm glad the guild found a squad that meets our needs. On good cooperation."
"We are glad to hear that. We will give our best."
They then began to unload the wagon they had brought. I sent Bruno out to support. At first they resisted because, in their view, it wasn't necessary. But I insisted because it was heavy construction material and they couldn't keep up with the bear's strength. They relented when I didn't accept their objection. When the wagon was empty, they immediately started the journey back. I offered them to spend a night here or at least eat something. But they politely declined the offer; they wanted to complete their task as quickly as possible.
"So these will be the ones we get to boss around in the future. What is your impression, Sven?"
"Hmm, it's too early to tell unless I've seen them in action. They seem to be well placed with their demi skills. They should not be underestimated when it comes to scouting. But the question is whether they can be used in combat. There also seems to be various tensions in their group. At least they try to do a good job. We'll see if this lasts."
"So their scouting skills are good. Are we at risk of being discovered?"
"Dog and cat ears can perceive more than human ears. We should probably warn Hilda to be more careful, just to be on the safe side. Otherwise they might be able to hear her coming downstairs."
"Good idea."
"And Albert, what do you think of Marco? Will we be able to stay there?"
"Hmm, at least he doesn't seem to share most people's dislike of Demis, Winfried. You saw Bruno. He already has a demi working for him. I think our chances are good."
"Who knows how he treats him. I wouldn't trust the peace too quickly."
"Oh Viktor, you're always such a grumpy. I think it's going to be super interesting. Have you seen Sarah? Those red eyes and her cold gaze. Brrr. I'm looking forward to finding out what kind of person she is."
"Just don't do anything stupid, Mia. How many times have you gotten us into trouble just because you couldn't control your curiosity?"
"Blah blah, you can just complain, Winfried."
"Ha, if that's your counter, then you agree with me."
"Are you looking for a fight?"
"Enough, you two. Don't forget that it's getting dark. We need your senses so that we don't get lost and recognize dangers in time. If we want him to keep us around, we should do a good job. Then he has no reason to cast us out. So if that's what you want, pull yourself together and do your job."
"As you command, Albert!"
"If it means, I can get to know Sarah quicker, fine."
"Just don't get excited too soon."
"Viktor!"
"Just saying."
We told Hilda about the encounter.
"What a cat demi? What did she look like? Does she also meow sporadically?"
"Do not be absurd. She is a demi and therefore more human than cat."
"Can I see her?"
"Unlikely. Nobody knows that you live here too and we can't arouse suspicion."
"I'll also be completely unsuspicious."
"You and unsuspicious. Most certainly. Why do you want to see her so badly?"
"I am a witch and we witches love cats. Now imagine a cat that you can really talk to. Isn't that every cat lover's dream?"
"If you say so. Still, I can't allow it."
"Ha, what does a dog lover like you know about cats? Then at least give me one, so I'm not so alone down there."
"You already have Heinrich and the test zombies. How many more should I summon for you?"
"Ah my heart. I think it's over for me. Is that a light?"
"... Alright, you win, stop it already."
"A black one please, thank you."
