This Hilda, I had no choice but to summon a skeleton. I needed some to take care of the transport between the levels anyway. But she shouldn't think, that I didn't know her intentions. I would summon a skeleton with a soul.
I took the crystal again and soon a skeleton stood in front of me.
"Your name is Fanny and you will help Friedrich with his tasks here."
"Fanny? You summoned a woman? Young master, it is not appropriate to let women do the hard work."
"You wanted him to have a skeleton, now he has a skeleton. If you don't like it, give him your Heinrich."
"Never. Come Heinrich, today's youth simply have no tact. I am eagerly awaiting you further down, Friedrich."
"I will catch up with you soon, dear Hilda."
With that, an offended Hilda disappeared. Had I won?
I introduced all the residents to Friedrich before he rode off with Fanny.
When I visited him later, I immediately noticed a difference when I entered the second level. It had become significantly cooler. Hilda's firefly breeding had paid off. There were so many of them that they were already present on the second level. It would still have to be seen whether they could withstand the cold. But for the moment they at least dispelled some of the darkness. In the semi-darkness I could therefore also see slight signs of snow. This level will probably be the brightest as soon as the snow is everywhere.
A little later I met Friedrich riding his skeleton.
"And? Would you prefer a sleigh?"
"No. I have to say, Madame Hilda is simply brilliant. The idea of riding a skeleton is something you have to come up with. As soon as you've tried it, you immediately see the advantages. A sleigh is nothing compared to that. How often have I driven over a stone or had to make a small jump, the impact of which all my bones had to feel. Even if a skeleton jumps back and forth a little, I don't feel it up here. These riding skeletons are very senior-friendly. Once you're older, you'll understand. As long as you're young and healthy, it's certainly difficult to understand."
"... Probably. How is it going down here?"
"Oh, reasonably well, I'd say. The plain is quite wide, so there's still a lot to do, but I'm confident."
"I'm glad to hear that. Then I won't hold you up any longer."
"Ah, one thing before you go, Mr. Marco. Do you know if Hilda and Heinrich have something going on?"
"... They're close, but I don't think it's anything serious."
"Ah, very nice. Sorry for asking. Thank you."
Was it the right answer? Would I regret it later?
Just a few days later I found out that Friedrich was apparently someone who was quick to act when he had a goal.
I wanted to see where things were at the moment and walked slowly through the crunching snow. Friedrich was right that you can only make slow progress on foot through snow. If there was really a lot of snow in winter, we probably had no chance of getting anything out of the forest.
When I finally found him, he wasn't alone. Hilda was sitting next to him and they were leaning against each other. They seemed to be looking dreamily into the distance. Apparently Friedrich had made his move with Hilda and she wasn't averse to him. That happened much faster than I had thought.
What about Heinrich? Would he accept that Hilda would just give him up like that? But I didn't have to worry about that, he had apparently fallen in love with Fanny. The two of them were sitting together a little further away from Friedrich and through their patchy bodies I could see them holding hands. I hadn't noticed them at first because of the lack of light.
I figured that as long as everyone was happy in the end, I was fine with it. So you had won in the end, Hilda. Apparently I had underestimated you. But wait. We're talking about Hilda here. Would a picture of lovers make sense? Wasn't it more likely that she was up to something again?
"Oh Hilda, these mushrooms are good."
"See, I'm telling you. Nothing can beat them."
"I've never felt so good. You are the best and most beautiful woman in the world."
"Oh, you charmer. Tell me that again when the effects have worn off."
"Hoho, I mean what I said. But how are we going to get back to our beds in this state?"
"Oh, don't worry about it. The skeletons cannot eat anything and will therefore bring us home safely."
"You are and will remain brilliant, beloved Hilda."
The snow had spread across the entire second level. The temperatures were therefore ideal for storage. I summoned two soulless skeletons and asked the core to keep an eye on our storage further up. The core always knew what was going on in the dungeon. He couldn't tell me exactly what was going on, but that wasn't necessary as long as he understood what I wanted from him. If the storage got too full, he should send a skeleton up to bring some of the supplies down. If, on the other hand, there was too little in the cold storage, then of course the opposite should happen. So that the cooling was not interrupted for a short time by the transport, I tried to make it clear to the core that he should pack some snow around the things when he brought them up. However, skeleton hands are not exactly ideal for this, so I gave a few snake skins, that we had left over, to them. The skeletons could then wrap these around the snow and thus create a good transport container.
As it turned out, it was also no problem for the dungeon to control several skeletons at once. So if it was really necessary, it could control the two skeletons at the same time and still move through the dungeon with its own skeleton.
This meant that the storage space for perishables was no longer a problem. So all that was left was for Albert's group to shower us with fruit to make the effort worthwhile.
The tools for the field should also arrive soon. I thought that the Demis would then no longer be able to complain about being bored.
